MTB ride?

Sorry for the hijack here, but are Mongoose MGX bikes any good? What can I pick up reasonably used that will have some decent travel out of the box? Most bike helmets I've seen are semi-foolish looking...should I just wear my dirt bike helmet?
No, Walmart bike. Take a look for a good used hardtail.

x2 on the Walmart bikes. Although if you want a merely funtional bike, a Schwinn (Target or Academy) will be a very inexpensive starter. Chances are though, that you will like riding and then rag the s*** out of that cheap Schwinn in a month or less. I went the cheap route and bought a 05 Raleigh M50DX just as the 06 bikes hit the floor. No where near some of the componentry on display in this thread but I think for my purposes it's an excellent bike for the money.

x3. A good hardtail is the way to go, you're forking over good money for crappy components that will break after just a bunny-hop. I got a Specialized Hardrock, with rim brakes(they didn't have the top model in stock) for bumming around town, and getting groceries. It's a good value, for $350 or so. and if you want a FS bike, you need to really think about the money, because it is a good chunk of change.
now i want a better one, had an old 'Stumpy before i got one like this, and it was good. too bad a friend of mine borrowed it and cracked the frame. he never told me what he did to it.......
I went cheap at first too. Bought a $400 Mongoose (not one of the Walnuts ones, but an entry level one none the less). Fell in love with the sport, and within months it started going to hell on me. Upgraded to a hardtail GT. Not much more money, but much better componentry due to it being a hardtail. Rode the hell out of it, still have it too. Been a great bike. The this is my main sled now.
6" inches of travel, Manitou fork, Manitou Swinger 3 way shock, Deore LX drivetrain, Hayes hydraulics, Race Face, Easton, etc, etc. Soon hoping to upgrade brakes and front fork.

I used to ride my Specialized Hardrock to work everyday. That was 10 years and 60lbs ago. I keep staring at it, trying to find the motivation. I need to get on that damn bike.

fully suspended 07 Kona Dawg Deluxe.
it's a blast.
And I got a few buddies who get me to go out a few times a week
10-12 miles at a time some fire roads,and some single track
nowhere near the fun my cruiser is but it'll keep (get) me in shape to enjoy the cruiser for years to come.
But I jumped in both feet and bought a

I went over the bars and cracked my wrist back in March... I'm still feeling pain in my palm from the remnants of a bone bruise from the wipeout.... so no riding for me recently. I think I'm close to getting back into the saddle.... I miss it.
Thanks for the help. The Mongoose was something I saw on Craig's List doing a quick search. Someone I talked to mentioned Specialized. A guy I know had a Trek he used to ride back in the day; I recall it being a nice bike as well.
I have to buy a few things before I can start thinking about the bike, but I'll keep looking. I'm not buying a cheap piece of crap, though; if I wanted to ride one of those, there's an old Huffy and old Ross in my folks' garage... :cough: serious pack rats :cough:
Have you ridden the Blur LT? There are no alternatives, except maybe the Nomad

Serously though, you can pick up a Santa Cruz Superlight for half the $ a good Blur runs, but it doesn't have the Virtual Pivot Point.

Makes it easier to have a Titus RacerX 100 and a 29er, especially since my roadbike was $500 used!Picked off 100 miles on the roadbikes on Saturday and then spent about 2 hours on the mtn bikes Sunday. cary--I have one 26" wheeled bike and one 29er so I switch back and forth. I would have to say I like the 29er better, to the point of wanting to sell my 26" Titus Racer X to fund a 29er Titus Racer X. While some people decry the extra weight of the 29er wheels, they really do roll so nice. I rode both bikes on the same course during a 24-hour race in June and could really note the differences. Even though the 29er is a hardtail, the wheels did a lot to smooth out the small bumps in the trail. I found I was able to roll across small dips, etc., that the 26" wheel tended to fall into. All the small bumps that seem to make a 26" wheel pause, the 29" wheel rolls over easier. The riding style is just different. It's kinda like single speeding. I wouldn't say it's better, or harder, or easier, it's just a different style of riding. In some cases, a 26er will accelerate quicker, and *may* be more manuverable in really, really tight situations but the 29er rolls farther, easier to keep momentum, and the newer designs can handle technical singeltrack really well. I always think my 29er rides smaller than it is and I'm amazed how tight I can thread it through things.
