My mechanic was installing an MSD ignition system in my FJ40. He could not get it to work and placed several trouble calls to MSD who finally gave him a test to determine if it was defective-it was. He called to tell me that he planned to send it to MSD for repair and return which would take a couple weeks. I asked him why he was not returning the defective part to summit racing where he bought it as they could easily replace it and deal with MSD themselves. He did not think summit would take it back. What has been the experiences of you guys will summit stiff him with the bad part or should I be looking for another explaination.

First off MSD turn around on repair is quick. I just sent in 2 MSD 6Al boxes and the day they received them they were repaired and sent out ...6 days from the time I sent them in till I received them back. My guess is that something was wired wrong...not hard to do if you are not familiar with MSD ignitions. MSD will send a repair order invoice back with the unit explaining what the problem was. Ask for the invoice from your mechanic and you will see what caused the problem.

It is not uncommon for Summit or anyone not to take returns on electrical items but my experience with Summit has been very good in the past on returned items. Did your mechanic check with Summit?

I have to agree with Phil. Very easy to wire wrong and kill the box before even getting started. My dealings with Summit have also be very good ... I've only returned a few items but never with a hassle.

Which MSD box?
I bought a blaster and had a bunch of problems getting it to spark at the right time..

If the main power is connected to the coil it is very easy to drain the battery enough that it will start but not power the MSD..
