i've posted a sanity test here, but tell me how yours felt. also...has anyone tried to wire to the rear wiring trailer loom?

Howdy! Aug of 82 I drove my 72 FJ40 from Cheyenne to Durango via Walsenburg, Alamosa, & Pagosa Springs. We went back thru Ouray, Montrose, Salida, Buena Vista, and then US 24 to Colorado Springs, and I 25 back home. The good news is that I was running a 350 and Q78's, so I could run fairly good speed. The bad news is I was accompanied by my very pregnant wife, a 1 year old and a 3 year old. I also was pulling a home made trailer that was the back half of a 63 chevy pickup so we could take along a playpen, swing, suitcases, etc. The scenery was, of course, beautiful. The drive, of course, was very long and tedious. No flats, no breakdowns, just an electric fuel pump that liked to vapor lock just before we would reach the peak of several of the higher passes. Would I do it again? Sure. Just take your time, be patient, and take lots of gas money!! John

80s are a completely different story though. 2f's have a hard time pulling the rig over passes...am i crazy to yank along a decent sized popup?

I pulled a 45lv rolling chaise and a 55 roof on a very well built flat bed trailer from Tucson to San Diego In my 55 and the only problem I had was the trailer was loaded with to much weight on the back causing the trailer to fish tail at about 60-mph. The elevation was not the same as Co but there were some big So Cal passes. and it did fine. 2F 4spd 35s 4:11.

now, anyone got any ideas for receiver hitches that fit? i still don't know the weight, but i'm sure it's not light. i've got an extra receiver hitch, but i don't trust my welding to cut it down to fit the pig. i don't know that i trust the "bumper" hitch. what is that crappy little "L" bracket style hitch rated at (mine's a besttop, which looks a tad stouter than oem).

I've got a class III receiver hitch that I just took off of my 55. It's in great shape. I went with a custom bumper and made the hitch into it.

The receiver hitch is beefy. $50 and it's yours and it's located at Proffitt's Cruisers in Delta. I'd say you could pick it up on your way to Moab (or I'll just bring it to you at CM08) but that doesn't help you much.

definitely be interested in the receiver (i prefer them over bumper hitches and i'll be able to use my shackle). if i don't use it on this pig, i'll use it on the other.
I can paypal you the money...just let me know your paypal, or snail mail addy and let jeremiah know i'll be out next month to get it

I think you will be fine. make sure the trucks brakes are good, and the trailer has the correct tongue weight (about 10-15% of trailer weight)

I towed a full sized flatbed car trailer, a 45lv frame and a 55 roof, and a PTO winch from stockton to san diego, and even over the grapevine(sealevel to 4000+ft pass) it was fine. Not fast by any means, and steep grades were 3rd gear, but no issue at all doing 65 on the flat ground...
