Hey guys. I am in need of a bike before next tuesday I love to trail ride and all but also need a bike as a commuter to and from classes. Im 5'10 165lbs and 18 years old. My price range is 500$ tops. Ive heard Trek 4300 and 4500s but they seem pricy. Anyone know of any other good suggestions? Preferably a hardtail and I dont really care about disc brakes.

I've been riding my Trek 850 for over ten years now, no complaints--combination of city riding and trails. Are the 4500s still made in the states?

Also, used bikes are a hell of a bargain, if you can find what you want, in your size, without too much damage. Try here:

I've got an '06 Fisher Tassajara Disk that I'm considering selling. I might be a smidge big for you, but you are more than welcome to come check it out if you'd like. It is about a $900 bike off the show room floor.

It'd take every bit of your $500.... i've upgraded all the componentry to XT and it has a new $80 thomson seat post and $60 WTB seat on it.

It's an XL, 21 inch frame, maybe a 20... I believe. It is a bit small on me at 6'5".

The fisher geometry is a bit different than that of Trek. they are a more stretched out bike. The top tube would probably be a good height for you, but it would probably be too long.

Anything nice enough to trail ride will get ripped while you're in class. Try to buy something used. There's a hard rock for sale in Memphis craigslist that would work great, but it's way over priced. Offer the guy $100 and see what happens.

You can probably find what you want here, but next Tue will be tough:

I rode a rock hopper comp everyday to class at Mississippi State and nobody touched it. I imagine that Ole Miss is going to be about the same. Lock it up good and it will be fine.

Dang too big and too much. I know you ride alot, what would you suggest? Its not gonna see trails all that much so I would be fine with something thats a little heavier and not so trail rated. Im not gonna mind if its heavy and all just something somewhat decent and can hold up to everyday riding.

The Hard Rock suggestion is a good one. They are cheap and heavy, but a really well built frame. You shouldn't have a problem finding a bike to fit you in a local store. Guys my size have to order s*** sight unseen because they don't stock bikes for Clydes... but 17 or 18 inch frames are available all day long.

I'd always ridden Specialized until I bought this Fisher. I like the bike, but it just seems a bit small on me, but it is as big as Fishers get. So I wouldn't mind selling it and getting a different make.

Casey Jones (cpjones or something or other on this board) is a local that had a smaller cannondale in your price range for sale. I think it might be a tad small for you though. Shoot him a pm or look in the classifieds for details.

EDIT:

Here's the link:

Casey was looking to move, I haven't talked to him in a while... not sure if he's still here or not. I don't know the bike nor whether it's a fair deal or not.

Ya I got a price on a fisher wahoo for 449 non disc but I really wanna spend the least possible since this is just a commuter primarily.

Good deal. I might go check that out. Im gonna head back sunday and see what I can find. Thanks for the help. Hopefully the prick who stole mine here gets hit by a train.

Do you want it mostly for commuting or mostly for trails?

If mostly commute, then buy a bike that has skinny tires. Unfortunately, a good commuter is not a great trail bike and a good trail bike doesn't make a good commuter.

I have a Trek 7100 (I think) for commuting. It has the skinny tires and upright riding position. I think I paid $319 brand new.

It will be mostly commute but I dont see anything over 5 miles in my future. So Id like something trail worthy and I dont mind workin for the ride anyways. I have a 2 mile commute to one class twice a week so I need it for that and need it for the trails when I wanna hit those.

invest in some locks homey.

I was just spouting off about mine being safe at Mississippi State, but I guess that's what you get for choosing to go to the thug school.

Hahhaha well we are called the rebels. Whatever It was a Jamis Tange. Just pissed me off when I went to ride to class and it was gone.
