Mount Cheam day trip Saturday, October 18, 2008.

LET’S GO WHEEL’N DAYTRIP

Heads up everybody – Wheel’n this Saturday up Mt. Cheam for the day.

Meet for breakfast at Ricky’s Restaurant, 45389 Luckakuck Way, Chilliwack.
Breakies at 8:30 a.m., Pullout 9:45 on the road.

Be prepared for ANY type of weather: sun, rain, sleet, snow, or all of the above.
Bring toques, gloves, rubber boots, raincoats, and sunscreen. Have decent tires on your rig. Bring your chainsaw and lopers. Bring your camera too.
Bring your lunch and hot coffee. Bring your spouse and kids.

This will probably be the last big club run for the season, SO BE THERE!

Won't be able to go, as I have to work next weekend. I went up Cheam on my own yesterday, which was a dumb idea because no one knew where I was. I had just gone out for a bit of a drive and started out at the Vedder Canal and found myself wandering up the Chilliwack Valley. Problem with the Mnt Cheam road is there are very few places to turn around without a spotter in a LWB until you hit the top where we turned around last year. It was raining hard and the Safari was already covered in mud, so the visibility for backing up was the pits. There are a couple low overhangs which may have to be cut out for the lifted trucks - especially if they have a basket on top. The cross ditches have been filled in a lot - so there won't be any hitch dragging Kim. The road is quite a bit rougher than when we did the run last year. It is erroded and has more loose rock and boulders. I didn't air down, which was probably a good thing, as I took a few good hits to the side walls. In one place the metal culvert has had the dirt erroded off it and is cracked open. Also, there are two corners closer to the open slope which are quite a bit more erroded on the outer bank. Coming done I had my rear left wheel dangling in the air. These corners are no problem for a short wheel base but are tight in a long wheel base. You don't want to ride up on the mountain side bank to high because a roll over there would not be good. Its a long way down before a tree catches you. I only stopped for a few minutes at the top before going down again. It started to snow hard and I wanted out of there before I had a repeat of last year's club run!

If on Friday the mountains have lots of snow on them or snow is in the forecast, I would go with a plan B like up to Foley Lake. The Cheam Mnt Road is not a good road to have to turn around a lot of rigs.

Good trail review, thanks.

I was up at Foley earlier this summer. The north fork just past the lake has been reactivated and there's now a gate. Not sure if the south fork is still as bad as it was when the debris torrents swept over the road a couple years back. Would be a low elevation side trip if snow up high was a problem. Snow may not be a problem yet.

I can probably make it on this trip.

Thanks for the update John, it will very much depend on the weather this week. If the rain continues later in the week there might not be much of a point in going there. the weather network right now says that Thursday and Friday will have rain in Chilliwack but Saturday and Sunday are just cloudy - of course they are usually wrong and it changes on a daily basis. Having a secondary, lower altitude trip as back up would be good. Do we know how many people are going? I am unless the weather is going to be total crap.

There is also another trail I heard about which goes from the Chilliwack Valley via DND land over the mountain into the Cultas Lake/Columbia Valley. I remember reading somewhere that they might gate it because of problems with it being a dump for stolen vehicles. I always wanted to take it some day but don't know where it starts. Maybe one of the club members knows it and if it is worthy to consider? BC40?

As for the Foley Lake Road, I only went on it last Christmas and had to turn around at a clay sluff on the South Side, just past where the road forks and goes across a bridge up to the North side. One of these days I need to get a winch. Although not having one has also kept me from venturing into trouble. :meh:

BTW, keep your tires well away from where people have built fires on the roads up there. For some reason there are some folks who like to build fires on trails out of old skids, which of course leaves nails in your path.

I love stupid people, it's a never ending natural resource - if we could only harness that and make money from it :hhmm:

I know that there are lots of people out there that are much smarter than me. How cum then, I keep running into the stupid assholes most places I go?

Yup, the old Chilliwack/Liumchen road. That went past the DND land above Cultus Lake. They solidly gated and barricaded from the Tahihi Creek entrance side. It was in the local paper during the summer that to stop camping up to the Tamihi bridge, and generally reduce hooliganism in the valley they closed that road and any trail access to Church Mtn and Liumchen. Brilliant. I didn't try from the Cultus Lake side but I expect it's firmly blocked as well.
Never been but I have seen photos of trails on Vedder Mtn. Some large mud holes. I think Greg V had a trip report of that a while back when he took the silver 60 out :hhmm:.

Too bad, I had always wanted to do that trail. Wonder if they will ever open it up again.

I've seen pics of the Vedder Mountain holes. Some are deceivingly small but very deep. There is a decent write-up on BC4x4: BC4x4.COM four wheel drive, 4x4, offroad and fourwheeling site.

Justin and I have been up Vedder a number of times. We like it because there is a variety of stuff. It is mostly exploring different side trails (not roads), but you do eventually come to a clearing overlooking the beautiful city of Yarrow. We have never been able to explore all the trails so we keep going back for short day trips.

Hi Guys,

Jason here, not sure if any of you will remember me, I came for the run up Harrison East in the early spring. Anyhow, I have done a fair bit of exploring on Vedder Mtn, and there are some rather fun trails there, including one that goes from where the start of the Vedder Ridge hiking trail is and over the top to the other side. Not too much mud, bot lots of other entertaining challenges. There is a plateau overlooking Yarrow that hangliders used to jump off that is a fun trail also (probably the same spot Greg referred to). I might be able to come along on Saturday. If so, and its a low altitude run I'd be happy to lead the group on these Vedder trails.

I'll check in towards the end of the week to let you know if I'll be joining.

Jason

JASON? IS THIS YOU?

I WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU CAN MAKE IT.

Marcin, that pic reminds me that if Rob brings his hard wood floor cuttings for the fire, no one will be able to complain they are cold - just that they have to rotate frequently. :hillbilly:

Yeah, that's me on the left, with my brother Daryl.

I really want to come out, I just have to make sure I don't have any conflicting family commitments. I have the new sliders on the truck, and want to try them out :bounce:

If we make a game day decision, I don't mind leading through some of the trails on Vedder. Just be prepared for the unknown and scratches.
