Just completely the first trip with the MotionX on an iPad and thought I'd give a brief review. This was after roughly 300 miles of offroad travel. Feel free to post your comments or correct me if I misunderstood a feature. This is great software and I'm looking forward to seeing it evolve.
Pro's:
- Exceptional easy of use. Controls are well thought-out and logical.
- Free map downloads.
- Maps are very close to real-world accuracy in terms of actual position vs where road is shown on map. Only a few times was there a gap.
- iPad tunes control is built-in. No need to switch aps.
- Very easy to add and edit waypoints. Way easier than on the Garmin.
- Very easy to download and import GPX tracks.
- Extremely easy to navigate to a lat/long.
Con's:
- All map data is on the tile image. No way to turn on/off layers on the map itself.
- Map text can become inverted when in track mode and heading south.
- Contours are in meters.
- Very long download times for large-area maps at level 14 zoom (like over 12 hours on wifi). Realistically zoom 15 should be used and 16 would be nice.
- No real trip computer. There is a computer, but it only runs when recording a track. Reasonable I guess, it just would have been nice for it to have started when I hit the downloaded GPX track.
- No elevation data on the speed head. I've grown to really like this feature on the Garmin.
- Navigating to a waypoint is line of sight. No road routing, even on major roads.
