I have never heard of these going out. Is this a common failure in the "much more dependable" manual gearboxes ? Why do you think they are failing?

I wish i knew. Most of my early kms were on the highway (i had a four year 100,000kms lease) so i wasn't changing gears too much whilst sitting on cruise control.
Since i've owned it outright (April 2009) i've done 50,000kms and i've been mainly driving (90%) in city traffic so a lot of gear changes but nothing out of the ordinary.

Given that Toyota replaced the first one under warranty and the history of bad servicing with them i'm hoping the first one was just a faulty bearing and the current one is dodgy workmanship. Time will tell i guess.

exhaust manifold leaking/ ticking and various codes caused by dirty throttle body. the oxygen sensors also seem to go out early. "D" light went out but i think it's a good thing. hope the tranny in my 2000 holds up since i tow with it.
