ok, ok.. probably getting boring by now...

so, the last H55F I put in the truck was easy.. before it went in it was stuck. input and output shafts wouldn't spin. Easy fix... I popped open the top cover and the shift forks were not alligned. i shifted the sliders into neutral, put reverse in the disengaged position and threw the top cover back on with the shift forks in neutral. Everything worked. it shifted in all the gears fine.

This one, when i got it, was stuck in what seemed to be 4th (input and output moved 1:1). I popped open the top cover expecting a similar scenareo and was surprised to see both sliders in the neutral positions. when i shifted any of them into a gear the tranny locked up. Could on of th egears (3rd or 4th) be stuck somehow? I thought so being that the tranny had probably sat for a while so I put everything in neutral and tried to break it free.... no dice.

Any advice?

also, I noticed that the gear closest to the transfer case moves back and forth a lot. is that normal? maybe the output shaft is not totally tight and it is not seated properly agains the back bearings?

included are a few pics for what they're worth.

any help is appreciated.

the rear gear movement is normal ( I assume this because mine was the same)

I just centrally aligned it and then re-aligned the shift rings and put in neutral.

all has been good to go for past 5k.

Howdy! I don't know about the H55, but many trannys have a set of needle bearings between the input and output shafts. They allow the two shafts to spin at different speeds, other than when in 4th ( 1 to 1) which is straight thru, no gears involved. You could try to force it, or soak it with a couple of gallons of solvent/diesel fuel, but you may want to break it down to find out what's going on in there. John

Thanks for the advice/input guys. Clint, I have been trying to read up all morning and It looks like that movement is indeed normal... your right. Good to know yours was like that and is fine.
Inkpot, i am assuming that something may be stuck, i'll possibly break it down tonight.

thanks again,
Marco

Howdy! Now that I think more about it..... There is one section that slides back and forth to connect/disconnect the two main shafts. I think it is the large rusty brown gear/hub near the center of the long shot of all the gears. It could be stuck in direct drive mode. Then the other gears would never be able to be engaged. Is the 4th gear shifter fork mounting on the shift collar properly? It should slide back and forth by hand. John

I had a similar issue. When I first got the transmission I spun the input shaft by hand and the output spun as well. Once I got something to hold the output shaft - like the transfer case, you could spin the input shaft and the output wouldn't spin. I guess it might have just been a little tight and need to break in a bit.

You might try to see if you can spin the shafts separately with something with a bit more force than just your hand.

solution. 4th gear syncro was RETARDED stuck. popped it off of the cone and it is in neutral. holy $hit what a relief.

now on with the project.
