Is there a certain brand or type of moly grease that is recommended for the steering knuckles? I have searched and most threads just say "use moly grease". I have been lazy as hell and have not rebuilt the front axle yet. I plan to check the grease in the knuckles and wanted to put the right stuff in. I know the fsm recommends a certain type, but just wanted to see if anyone out there has a recommendation. Where can I buy the stuff? I am heading to Harbor Freight to get a grease gun with just a standard tip.

Thanks,

Riley

Thanks for recommendation

I will check around to see who has Mobil 1 synth moly.

Thanks again!

Driley,

Might need to scratch Mobil 1 Synth Grease. It's properties look similar to that of Amsoil HD Synthetic Grease but it does not say anything like it's moly fortified. Amsoil says "moly fortified" on the tube so there's no doubt about that.

I checked with Mobil for additional info and they said it does not have moly on it. Guess I'll order some more of the Amsoil.

Correct. Mobil 1 is does not have moly and would not be the best choice for the birfs. However, it may be used for wheel bearings, U-joints, and driveshaft splines.

It's not a bad idea to have two grease guns. One with Moly grease and the other with Mobil 1.
With this setup you can add moly grease to your knuckles when they need it. And lube the drive shafts with Mobil 1.

Knowledge central...

Once again, I am amazed at the help I receive here! When I am at Harbor, I will just buy 2 guns (Thanks for the idea Alvaro). I swear that the last time I was in Harbor, they had moly grease. I will check and make sure that it says "moly".

Sorry for the newbie question, I just wanted to get it right. On my old BMW (that I still have for sale, by the way), I just trust my mechanic to do everything.

Thanks again,

Riley

Is there any reason not to use moly grease for the drive shafts?

Valvoline has three "grades" of moly grease. They all look dark gray/black with a sightly gritty consistency to them. This is in direct contrast to wheel bearing grease which is smooth as silk.

The Valvoline comes in tubs and tubes. I recommend the tubs for the knuckle packing use while it is open and a tube for your #2 grease gun for re-filling later on down the line.

You need about 2-3 tubs per side going with the Valvoline. I generally stick with the synthetic or the semi-synthetic.

Good luck.

Good point. You can use moly grease lo lube your drive shafts. But, it's more expensive.
Besides, having two grease guns is cooler.

? if you are going to just add some grease to the knuckles, how much should you add?

It is OK to use moly in the slip yokes, I think it is actually better there. I use non-moly in the u-joints. Old guys like me claim it is safest to use non-moly where bearing speeds are high...although some moly greases do claim to be ok for bearings. There have been claims of bearings sliding in moly where they should be rolling.

Not really sure how much of moly grease to put in through the fill hole. Others may know how much exactly but unless you open it, you won't know how much grease is in the knuckle cavity. Filling is no substitute to servicing your axles and really packing them with good amount of grease.

Without any information in hand, I added grease this way a few weeks after I got my LC. I did it primarily to try it myself and to be assured that I've enough of them. That time it was on a "good enough" basis. When I first did the axle rebuild, I found out there was sufficient amount of grease and after the fact, I know that my knuckles are grease-packed sufficiently.

See FAQ for axle servicing if you are interested to do it yourself. It will be messy but it will be fun. I found it gratifying considering the lack of wrenching know-how.

My understanding is that adding moly through the check hole has little to no chance of actually lubricating the birf. I suspect that there is a possibility of over filling the knuckle at some point as well--leading to premature seal failure(?).

I figure, if I'm not getting massive quantities showing up in the diff, and I'm not getting major leakage through the knuckle wipers/seals, then I still have nearly the same amount of moly in the knuckle that I began with when I repacked.

So when you rebuild the front axles you should use moly grease for the birfields and lithium grease for the wheel & trunion bearings?

UPS tracking said I should get my parts today, so I'm probably going to attack that this weekend. Want to make sure I have the right stuff.

Roger on that. Guess you've given the procedure in FAQ a good read.

Yep - I'll have another look at it before I start. And watching the theatrical version as well :grinpimp:

You've got El Mariachi's DVD, cool! If you bring out a portable player, be sure to place the remote in plastic :D.

Lol - well, I have my laptop from work. No remote though, and it'll cook itself if I wrap it in plastic! I've got an old ball mouse that I don't care if it gets trashed that I could hook up though.
