I need help in planning a winter trip through the Mojave Preserve leaving either from the Avi Casino on the Colorado River or Primm Nevada area.

I want to explore the side trips along the Mojave Trail. Find the best out of the way campsites, mines and canyons and “Not to be missed sights” etc.

Planning about 4 days for the trip ending in Calico.

Thanks for any insights and help! GPS waypoints would be great.

I am planning this trip for the SoCal Land Cruiser Club and happy to have any of you join! If possible, I want to keep the trip to ten vehicles or less.

The plan is to do the side trips off of the Mojave Trail as opposed to only driving the Mojave trail. I like the idea of chasing down the abandoned mines in the area, while hitting the highlights of the trail such as the lava tubes and finding great places to camp. So if any of you know of great side trips, let me know. I have driven the trail, but I'm not that familiar with the surroundings.

I’m sure we won’t be able to see everything, but that’s OK. At the end of the trail we will hit Calico for the New Year.

Yes, Paul is going.

Haven’t talked to Calico Kid in a long time, I’m sure he would have some insights.

Sounds like a blast Jerry. Wish I felt I'd be ready for an expedition like this, but I just don't think so after five weeks of recovery. Have fun and stay WARM!

Cool. I look forward to seeing what you find out.
I am planning to go the other direction to the desert race in Laughlin on Dec 13. Some other friends are doing the high speed run out there Friday and I was going to make it a 2 day (thur-fri).
If it happens I will post up.

I'm still in the planning stages and I'm getting alot of info at the Portal forum. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/118993-Mojave-Road-Area?p=1469237#post1469237

I'll post the intended trail as soon as I have a better idea were we are going.

Update: Completed the Mojave Preserve Trip

The Mojave National Preserve trip went very well! We started out from Primm, Nevada and headed out to find the Colosseum Mine ... turned out to be a big hole in the ground ... a really big hole! Very impressive! Spent a night at the Morning Star Mine, but all mine access roads were blocked closed. Camped a couple of hundred yard away. Great dirt track, but the mine is not much to see.

Loved our stay in Caruthers Canyon! Absolutely beautiful! Can't wait to camp there again. Visited the Kelso Train Depot and found it impressive and worth the stop. Walked in the Lava Tubes and took a few underground pictures. Followed the Afton Canyon on our last night and found a fun campsite below giant mud cliffs. As always needed more time!!
