Just finished the Mojave Road from East to West (except the Soda Lake portion...a sure recipe for disaster after the rains)

Here's a couple pictures:

Oh man, make sure you wash and wash and wash all that mud off from Soda lake. It will rust your rig to pieces if you let it sit. Soda lake is Sodium Bicarbonate which is pretty much made of salt. When I did this run I was on the lake after a freak summer storm and it made my truck (Chevy at the time) get some serious rust and crust.

Great pics. I wish we had something even remotely close to that kind of terrain in central Missouri.

Burnoil,

Yep, absolutely right!! I stopped off in Barstow and shoveled handful(s) of quarters into a car wash until I got all that salt-flavored mud (don't ask me how I know) off the '80.

Planning to run it this February. How much fuel did you end up using? What were your start and end points?

It is not a super long trail, even if you do side trips. You can also get out to civilization in some portions. Have enough gas to go the equivalent of 250 miles on a freeway. You can even bypass some of the original route by taking a graded road next to it.

Get this guide book. It is VERY GOOD at describing the history and the route, plus it has GPS points which are helpful near the start of the road.

The trail is not hard, but it is very scenic. Winds could be a big problem in Feb.

We started on the west bank of the Colorado River IVO Laughlin, NV. I topped off the tank and put four gallons into each of the the four (horizontal) fuel cans on the roof rack. Dumped eight gallons into the tank during the road and finished IVO Rasor Road off the I-15 south of Baker, CA with about half a tank remaining. However, we also took a significant side trip (+/- 30 miles) to Geoffs Schoolhouse/Museum and had to detour around Soda Lake/Baker, CA to get to the other side and finish.
