Any interest in a Moab trip in October?

I'll be off work from the 11th - 26th and was thinking of heading out that way for a few days.

I've never been, so I'd probably keep it pretty light. Some wheelin', camping, birdwatchin' :grinpimp:, etc.

I'd be up for going anytime during those two weeks, but would I'd probably prefer going earlier in those two weeks than later.

Do it Travis. I had a blast out there, even if I took on some damage. I'm sure the trails you run will be more favorable to a wide bodied rig though.

We ran Gold Bar Rim, Rusty Nail, Kane Creek Canyon (out and back), Moab Rim, Cliffhanger, and Pritchett Canyon.

I will be out there 24-26 October with at least a couple other people/rigs.

Kane Creek is definitely on a must do if you have a capable vehicle to finish. Otherwise you'll have to run it out (to within a mile of the trail end) and back and expect that to take all day.

Nah. It doesn't take all day. We ran it out in back in a few hours. Was pouring rain coming back down. We rain out and back since 2 of the rigs were running comp stickies and couldn't travel the highway.

I think the rocky section climbing the shelf and the final climb after crossing the creek would be problematic for some.

The road leading into the trail blows. I hate it. But bombing through the creek is a blast.

Yeah but not all of us wanna take a bag of hammers to our vehicles...

Those are the exact two sections I am talking about some needing to turn around at. My buddies 94 that was open diff just couldn't make it up.

That road is horrible. I totally agree. Having Lockhart and Kane Creek at the end make it all worth while though!

You shouldn't take any damage on Kane Creek unless you slide into rocks in the off camber sections... I certainly left the trail without any damage. Unless you take the pinstriping from the trees in the creek bottom into account.

:D Looks like a good time. Being my first time out there (and the fact that I'll probably have my big kids along), I'll most likely take it pretty easy. ???
Need to do a bit more research.

Bought the Charles Wells guide to Moab today. I'm ready!!! Moab Rim, Kane Creek, Golden Spike, And Fins and Things are on my radar.

Yeah, I was sitting on the throne yesterday looking at mine. Getting excited.

Also, talked with my dad and he's excited about going (and trying out his new-to-him 4runner).

My kiddo has the 16th and 17th off, so I'm thinking that if I do get to go, it'll probably be the 15th (leaving in the afternoon) through the 19th....tentatively. :)

Some Moab fun sounds pretty good to me. I am planning to join in. I will try to commit when the dates firm up. If the 15-19th holds up, it will probably be just me, since the kiddo has school and the wife has an exam on the 16th or 17th.

Thought I would be able to make this work but some problems at school has halted a lot of time off lately. Have fun and be safe. I liked red elephant hill as there was an awesome hike, but it is a long trail. Dang moose Pritchett canyon is supposed to be pretty tough, nice job.

I will definitely be heading down that way on the 24th. Well kinda/maybe. If the area is still open, and snow isn't an issue. Then Friday the 24th me and 5 or 6 other people/vehicles (depending on the usual last minute bails and the like) are planning to go camp out at the high elevation of Boulder Mountain. From there we are heading into Moab (Saturday) and heading back to SLC on Sunday. If weather on the mountain sucks then it is right into Moab.

All are welcome to join.

The others that are joining are: ZJ, WJ, TJ, 2xYJs Jeeps. So another capable Toyota to pull the Jeeps out when they get stuck or break down will be great!

Travis, have you firmed-up on the date? I think at this point that I can make it for a 4-day weekend for any of the dates you mention above. A friend from ABQ wants to come up and ride along, but can't make the 16-19th weekend. If you stick with that weekend, its OK with me...i promised him a snow-wheelin trip if he can't go to moab:). Let me know when you get it nailed down for sure and I will put in for PTO at work.

I've been reading up online a bit...Fins and Things and Kane Creek sound like must-do trails to me. Moab rim and Golden Spike sound a bit on the tough side for an unlocked rig. Any thoughts on this? Don't get me wrong, I'm good with a little trouble, but I'd like to avoid an epic misadventure.

Looks like the only weekend I'll be able to go is the 16th-19th. I'll get the dates "nailed down" tomorrow and let you know for sure.

Haven't had to time to take a good look at my Wells book yet, hope to do that soon. You going to come out on Sunday? We could always talk it over then.

Getting excited about my first trip to Moab trip! :steer:

Hey Luke, any idea what dates you'll be heading out there?

Make sure you have a GPS, or a good map, for Kane Creek. Once you get into the Creek bottom, you should be able to follow the tracks, but there's a couple of turns that end up in dead ends. Just watch for the trail. There are some washouts and some very off camber sections before you get to the creek bottom. Some have some very good wagon whackers on them as well. The section climbing out of the creek is also very rocky, and sits close to a cliff. The easily line is also off camber on the ledge, with it tipping you towards the ledge. It's not too bad, but just pick a good line and you should be fine. It's also not the best place to pull line if you need to. If you get to that point and decide that it's too much for you, you can turn around and go out the way you came. This trail normally runs straight through and puts you back out on 191 south of Moab (about 15 miles).

Moab Rim may get you on the Z Turn. Pick a good line and you should be fine. For those with lower clearance, you'll probably scrape.

My recommendation would be to check out Cliffhanger (just past the Amasa Back trail head on your right) on your way to Kane Creek as well. With the exception of the entrance/exit, it's a fun trail and not that hard, but provides many optional lines should you like to try them. Just check out the entrance on the way to Kane Creek, and you can get a better idea if it's something you'd like to try.

Andrew - Don't worry too much about not being locked. A lot of the obstacles are sand stone that provide a large amount of traction. If you're on a ledge and humping it and can't get over it, just back up and bump over it. You'll be golden.

Look at running Hells Revenge as well. The Escalator and Hells Gate are optional. The Tip Over Challenge has a bypass as well. Ran it at Cruise Moab with 100 series, and they had no issues.
