Red: You're onto it. There is a learning curve on using the TRAC to the best of it's abilities.

#1 thing to know...go light on the gas, keep it steady on the gas, and don't go up and down on the gas. Let the system work itself.

#2...You report on things worsening does not sound right. Locking the rear has no effect on the system other than that the rear brakes/TRAC will not activate, only the front TRAC works. I'd suspect pedal amount, but I wasn't there.

Great news on the FJ TRAC. It's newer and hopefully it's improved. Sounds like a great trip!

That is a very nice write up.

Do you tow using regular hitch system or Slee rear bumper?

Most traction control does not work very well when you floor it. Just curius did you lock the center diff also? It should lock automatically from factory unless you did some mod. Samol found out that if you did not disable ABS and use low range with open center diff it would use highway traction control logic instead off road logic.

On a 2001 you have a CDL switch. It doesn't lock automatically.

You're right. TRAC and open CDL is not for off-roading.

On hill climbs and twisted areas, it's DANGEROUS to have TRAC and an UN-locked CDL. You must lock.

I see how TRAC could easily confuse a driver who has never experienced it before...It sounds like all hell is breaking loose up front  , but once you know how it works and what its doing.... :D :D :D

That mpg towing is worse than my motorhome. I got 9.5 mpg in a 40' MH pulling my 45 on a steel trailer at about 7k#. Na-na-na-na-na.
G

You could get 10 even if you let me have that 45. :flipoff2:

Researching "towing a FJ40 with 100" and came across this oldie but goodie.

Great write-up Nolen!

Haha. It is a great tow rig as long as gas money is not an issue

I love how mine tows! I was very suprised at how well it did. It was the perfect compromise for me. Granted if I was towing all of the time, I would really miss my Cummins but this thing is great!
