Milwaukee M18 Hotshot jump box

Any thoughts on these? Came out recently so not much info other than a bunch of knucklehead videos. Supposedly works off any M18 battery but 5ah+ recommended. Different than traditional jump box in that battery charges capacitor(s) that can fire off the juice to start a car. 5ah bat gives up to 70 jumps. Can't pull 12v off like a regular jump box.

One of my sons has a similar Milwaukee product, a lot smaller though, to use an M18 battery as a charging station for electronic devices. I doubt that one could jump a car but I wouldn't bet against it. It saved our bacon on a week-long motorcycle trip through the Uintah Mountains. just charging phones and whatnot.

I am a fan of the M18 universe anyway; all my homebuilding tools and more of my shop tools are moving in that direction.

I've shifted from Dewalt to Milwaukee in recent years so have plenty of M18 batteries. Still occasionally buy Dewalt but I've got just about everything basic in Dewalt and Milwaukee seems to have the higher end specialty tools. The M18 Hotshot is interesting but will probably give it some time to get some real world feedback.

I've been surprised that all the cordless tool battery companies haven't had these for years. It seems like a no-brainer.

The capacitors are the secret - storing up enough charge to give you a decent jolt. Too much money for what it is imo. $300 price tag and it’s only rated for 2000 peak amps. They claim up to a 8 liter gas or 3 liter diesel with it too. But for $70 more you can buy a Noco GBX155 that’s rated for 4250 amps for $370 that’s good for any gas motor or diesel you’re likely to encounter.

I am a Milwaukee guy, that’s what all my power tools are and I use their inflater (m18), both the m12 and m18 shop vacs, and the top off that @1911 mentions above and both of those are amazing. However the jump pack is overpriced imo

I would imagine that with capacitors the blast won't last very long before they are discharged. Wonder if that would be a problem for engines that are slow to start.

I think they last up to 30 seconds before shutting off. Think I remember over a minute to charge but several videos showed it at over 90% after a jump so assume a quicker recharge. You're probably right though about engines that may require some extended grinding to get going.

Probably end up getting something more traditional.

Noco has a good range of sub $200 ones. I’ve also heard good things about the GooLoo. Project farm did a good series on it that I found helpful.



The x version is their newer line with a bit more power. I’ve got their big one (GBX155) and the small GBX45 and have been really happy with both. I got the GBX155 on Black Friday for under $300, however it is big and bulky and for the most part unneeded for most people. I just have it due to having diesels I may need to jump start.

The OP's posted-about starter looks huge.
Been happy with both the size and the performance of my Antigravity Battery XP-10. It got a Cummins 6BT running when a jump off of a running truck that had been at high idle while connected for 45 mins didn't.
