Does an opened a carton of milk deteriorate faster than a sealed one?

I likes me some fresh milk and wonder if it would be better to buy a couple smaller cartons than one larger one for lasting between grocery runs. I suppose freezing would be an option too...

Thoughts?

Logic would state that if you buy small amounts every few days you are constantly getting fresher milk if you buy from a place that sells and restocks daily.

....or am i nuts to think that?

Freezing milk sucks, it separates the fat and never tastes the same.

True, but for camping it works great. I buy 1% so some shaking and it is all good.

True, but the close grocery store kinda sucks. I guess there's always convenience stores..... but question still stands, if you're getting say 4L of mild, is it best to get one jug, or two 2L cartons.

Or hook up with a lactating hottie.

the shelf life of an opened vs. unopened container of milk would be perhaps a day.

if you can find uht (ultra high temp. process) milk, that keeps for about 6-9 months unopened. and i believe you can store it at room temperature.

Shelf milk, we used to take that out for cereal in field camps when I worked with the provincial geo. survey. Don't remember it being too fantastic. :meh:

Oh well, no biggy on the question, just an idea that popped into my head last night. I suppose I could easily test and find out myself.

On our Submarine we got some box milk that was not refridgerated and I thought it was good. It had a slight sweet taste to it also. Way better than the powdered crap.

But it doesn't taste like milk. I had some of that sh*t in Africa on cereal. There is something wrong with opening a TetraBrick hundreds of miles from the nearest refrigeration, that is already 85*F, and seeing that it doesn't expire until 2047.

that stuff in the hi-c type box?? yeah.... the chocolate milk wasnt bad, the regular milk tasted like white water.

It was in a big box like 1 gallon.

Pure milk from a cow doesn't 'spoil' - it ferments. It may not be terribly appetizing, but I have eaten pure milk that sat in a glass bowl covered by cheesecloth for six weeks (unrefrigerated). It tasted like sweet cottage cheese. I ate plenty of it and once I was past the notion of it being 'spoiled' (because it wasn't), I enjoyed it.

Basically it was home-made yogurt

Milk that has been pasteurized will actually spoil in a way that is bad for you to consume.
