I have a '98 with 136k miles and the OEM battery terminal clamps are tightened about as far and they're still loose so I figured it was time to make the switch to some heavy duty military clamps. I've used this style of battery clamp before on a couple 60's and they work really well.

The adapter material is a highly conductive copper plate that is about 1/8" thick. I used a Dremel with a heavy cut-off wheel but you could use an angle grinder and a file to make the necessary cuts as well.

The pictures are pretty self explanatory (I'll apologize for the mixture of day/night photos for some reason my camera mysteriously deletes photos so I had to retake a couple). For the negative terminal I cut off enough of the original clamp to leave a square tab attached to the battery cable, then I drilled a hole in the middle of it and attached it to the new clamp.

I have enough material from the original piece of copper to make 4 more adapters (not getting anymore...you could source it locally or from McMaster, etc.). PM me if you want me to send you one of these blanks so you can make your own adapter $8 (including shipping).

Not to take away from this good job, another way is to simply get a piece of flat copper strap approx 3/4" x 1/8" and drill a hole for the battery terminal, put it in the vice and use a shifter(wrench?) to twist the copper strap 90 degrees and cut to length and drill another hole and the job is done. Use the great terminal covers as pictured. This works especially well with batteries with centre terminals as you can lengthen the strap.

Nicely done 100 TD! I thought about doing the same thing but there wasn't much space from the terminal to the edge of the stock battery and wanted to make sure the weight of the mini fuse box and battery cable wouldn't bend the adapter down over time hence the angled cuts taking the adapter around the post. In hindsight it was probably a little overkill...hasn't budged in almost a year :)

I really wish someone enterprising MUDder would make up a batch or two for sale!

Hmmm.....given me ideas. I have access to a band saw and metal bend brake at work now. Might have to buy some copper stock and get to work.
