Ah, the mighty Scorpio! I drove one of those in SUV form in India. Pretty good little diesel in them. It's hard to
get decent off road tires in India, more important to have long lasting tires. Usual, everyone stands around watching.
 
I bet they had the hood open to help clear the water getting tossed up from the fan. The tossing of the water can really bog down an engine even if only part of the fan is covered since it scoops water up towards the hood and then just goes everywhere... i could be wrong but that would have been my guess

YA sounds right to me, I think I have heard of people putting a blanket over the front too? Might be OK with a clutch fan....
 
Yeah the blanket over the Hood is so that the water gets pushed instead of going through the grill. If the water is pushed it creates a bow wave which actually makes a lower water level right in front of the truck if you do it at the right speed. It needs to be calm water though but this also helps water stay away from your intake

YA sounds right to me, I think I have heard of people putting a blanket over the front too? Might be OK with a clutch fan....

Guys, if you look close at the first video you can see temporary make shift snorkels coming out from under the open hoods.
