I'm planning a trip up Handies Peak (easy 14ner) the night of August 12-morning of August 13 for the Persieds Meteor shower. We'll be leaving out of American Basin (off the Cinnamon Pass 4WD trail) in the San Juans around 10:30pm. It can be reached from either Silverton or Lake City. Its a pretty tame trail, but American Basin is a bit rough. Just thought I would post up in case anybody was interested in joining the hike.

Yeah Mark, American Basin is one of my favorite places in the state. Beautiful up there in mid-July w/ wild flowers. Travis, keep me posted...I plan on heading down to Ouray/Silverton on the 9th to get a few days of hiking in before hand.

Kyle, I'm looking into staying in a hotel Sunday night to wash up and have a nice bed to sleep in after a weekend of wheeling.

Would you suggest staying in Montrose (after wheeling in the BV area that weekend)? Or would somewhere else be better/closer to the trailhead?

I'm planning on joining you, but it really depends on whether or not my mother-in-law can stay and watch the kiddos until Tuesday.

It all kind of depends on comfort level. Montrose or Gunison have "named brand" hotels to choose from. I like Silverton and Ouray, but beds usually aren't as comfortable. I think there is a Best Western in Ouray that would have modern beds, but not sure how full it is (its normally busy). I usually stay at the Grand Imperial in Silverton (~$80 a night), but you hear every noise and the beds are ancient. If you want to camp, there are showers in town ($7 at the RV park on the east side of town). I'm sure there are more comfortable beds in Silverton (the Wyman or Teller House may be better, just haven't stayed there). We'll probably be down in Silverton on Sunday. I'll be sure to get you a number to contact us with. Glad you will likely be able to make it out (you won't be disappointed w/ the San Juans!)

Kyle,

1. Where are you crashing Sunday night?

2. What are you doing Monday pre-hike?

3. What route are you taking to get home Tuesday ( I was thinking of taking Engineer Pass or Cinnamon Pass to 149 to......)?

Travis...
1. We hope to be camped out down South Mineral Creek north of Silverton...there is dispersed camping along the road and a campground, but I"m not sure how full the campground will be, so hence the dispersed camping. But we'll be somewhere along that road. We are planning hiking Columbine Lake to Lewis Lake/Mill that morning and afternoon...should be back by mid/late afternoon.

2. Monday we'll break camp, load up and head over Cinnamon Pass into American Basin for that evening to get a bit sleep before hiking. We may spend time on the cruiser trails during the day...maybe do Engineer Pass or something.

3. We aren't coming home until Wednesday evening...we'll probably sleep some Tuesday morning and maybe go do some easy hikes (Cataract Lake) or do some more jeep trails. From American Basin its easiest to head down Cinnamon to 149...north to US50 and home.
