Need a diagnosis!

Noisy metal noise during regular driving. Brakes sound “crunchy” when coming to a complete stop and feel spongy

Check your pads. Sounds like one or more is completely worn down to metal on metal.

yes, there is very little separation between the pad/rotor when the brake pedal is not being pressed. Pad manufactures will design a wear indicator which is a small piece of metal, it is designed to rub against the rotor to make a metal/metal sound.

I say this is another case of the rusted backing plate.
