I am replacing a leaking after market water pump for my 92 Runner with a new Aisin pump. Received a metal gasket with black rubber seals for it. I am not familiar with this type of gasket and having trouble finding good info on install procedure. Is this to be used "as is," or am I supposed to use FIPG on the metal part. Also, FIPG around the thermostat housing? Appreciate any responses!

Never seen a metal gasket on a water pump, not sure how that goes.

Will be interested to see if anyone can offer any advice.

I have the 3fvze engine. All of the openings for the coolant flow through the engine block have a thin rubber ring on the inside of the corresponding openings of metal plate of the gasket. Also wondering if torque specs for the bolts are the same as with a composition gasket.

OK, I just called Toyota service rep with the question. He wasn't sure so he talked to the shop foreman. The official Toyota line is using the gasket as is with no sealer. In the shop, however, they always use FIPG on the engine block side of the gasket and install the pump directly to the gasket with no sealer. The thought process is the engine block will have some pitting or irregularities that the FIPG will seal, whereas the water pump is a machined surface that will seal directly with the metal gasket. The thermostat housing also seals to the metal part of the gasket so I will use FIPG for that.

I don't know how much this will help, but the water pump that I'm installing this weekend in the 3MZ in my car also came with a metal gasket:

The FSM doesn't say anything about sealants or FIPG, and the torque spec is 71 INCH-lbs (not FT-lbs).
