Showed the GF photos of last weekends club run on the Mt Thurston loop and she talked me into going camping this weekend :grinpimp:. I'm thinking with the nice weather forecast I want to head up to the Pemberton area. I haven't been up there in at least 5 yrs but I think it's a worthy destination. Yes it will be cold out but all the better for soaking in the hotsprings.

Anyone know the status of the road into Meager? I expect the gate in front of the bridge will be locked so we're bringing our bikes along to peddle in.

How about the road to where you hike down into the canyon at Pebble Creek; still accessible? Beyond Pebble Creek towards keyhole falls and the old pumice mine?

Called about meager . was closing Oct 17. for the winter. Was planing on going up for the Thanx giving long but never made it. Call Creekside Resources for more info 604 894 6145, the tubs will be drained for the winter. Watch for rain if going to pebble creek.

Thanks for the info .

Umm yeah. Thought about the couplecruise thing archeologystudent is organizing but it just won't work for us on the Rememberance Day long weekend.

Cause your going to Pismo right?:D

Sorry mang, you're on your own for that trip. Just can't justify that much time off right now.

As for the weekend, we made it in to both hotsprings and explored the upper valley a bit. Too much to do in just two days. I was supprised how busy it was up there. And of course a bunch of neked people that really ought to stay clothed in the presence of others. Otherwise a great trip despite putting my first dent in the 40 when I decided to do a little off trail wheeling to a camping spot for Saturday night. The dent is barely noticable and waking up to the view of Mt Meager made it all worthwhile .

I like to buy my cruisers pre-dented, thatway I dont have to make the first move:p

Who is this Northern stranger posting on the CC forum :D
I think that avatar address needs to be updated... Whonnock indeed!

The story on Meager is that they list the springs as "closed" when the caretaker is not there to look after them. Liability reasons I imagine; if the springs are closed and you are there anyway and a landslide wipes you out...well not Forestry's fault! I was up there on that weekend doing a mushroom picking tour (lots of matsutake!) and we dropped into the springs and it was a bit of a zoo. Drunk guys driving their dirtbikes on the path to the springs, etc. Not very pretty. But the "private" pools further up the path were not busy (unlike the main pool which had like 30 people in it).

So just because the sign says "closed", or forestry says they are "closed", means nothing. I don't believe that they are gating the road to the springs any more, but YMMV.

The main road to Pebble (or keyhole falls) hotsprings stays open till the road gets blocked by snow (for the pumice mine), and when that happens the forestry road gets gated just after the hurley turn-off. From then on, it's snow machines only. There were about 6 trucks parked in the pebble pullout that weekend so those springs must have been busy too (especially since you can only fit about 6 people in the main pools). By the way, if you keep going past the springs, there are some fabulous views of the moose pasture flats further up the valley. The bridge over the river at the keyhole falls has been deactivated, but there is another road that is getting quite overgrown that continues on down the valley towards the flats that I plan to check out sometime. Google earth satellite view shows that there is another old logging road on the north side that must be deactivated by now; the valley eventually terminates at a glacier on the pemberton icefield. Doesn't seem to be any way to get close to it, though.

Yup, exactly our findings on the springs. Sign says road is closed and has all the evacuation plans/shelter zones/slide hazard maps. We figured take a chance and worst case forestry would chase us out. The place was packed to our surprise.

The upper valley I had hoped to cross to the south side but without the bridge decking and limited time we didn't bother. We had our bikes but chose to stop at keyhole instead.
Those road cuts to the meadow and above it are getting quite thick and will soon be obliterated. There appears to be an old trail from the switchback of the clearcut that continues further up the valley, might be worth investigating.

Lots to see and explore, couldn't get to much of it in two days. Maybe another time. BTW, I saw Paul in his 4runner Saturday, you werent up there in a silver FJCruiser were you? Guess not based on your sig.

Nope, I was there in the HDJ81.

I'm fascinated by the glacier at the head of the valley. From google earth satellite view it looks almost as big as the Bridge River glacier, and it's only about 12 km up the valley from Keyhole. There are no easily accessible large glaciers in the lower mainland; Bridge River glacier you can floatplane into and land on the lake, the others require heli. But looks like forestry has no plans to continue up that valley. Good for the bears I guess, too bad about getting near the glacier.
