Does anyone have a link to the newest sd card for the gps? Have a 2016 and I have to assume there are newer maps, but i cant find anything online.

Personally I've found Google Maps to be way more reliable on several levels:
  • More accurate mapping
  • Constant updates, especially handy in new developing areas.
  • Live traffic.
  • Dynamic real time to destination determined by your speed, traffic, road closures, etc.
  • Tells you where an address is even in a large mall or address's that are not on a street.
The only thing I really use the onboard navigation is the bread crumbs for is when we're off roading. Makes sure I always have a track back to pavement. Love that feature!

Yes i definitely use google maps, just wanted the gps to be as updated as possible. Love the bread crumbs feature as well.

Looks like if you have a pre-2014, you'll need a propitiatory tool via USB to update. 2014 and after, just a Micro SD card.

Would the SD card from a 2016 4Runner work as I have a 2019 (might be 2020) card that I don’t need that the OP could have if it’d work?

To be blunt to OP… no free updates for nav 10-22

there are some encryption keys involved that require payment
I didnt expect anything free. I just figured someone would have a link to the newest SD card.

I wonder. I had a 2015 4runner and the navigation on this 2016 premium seems exactly the same to me.

From what I have read the cards marry themselves (probably VIN or some other unique identifier is written back to card) to the vehicle when used for the first time so even if it was compatible it should only work with your 4R. There are probably some grey market versions out there on eBay. New map updates usually come out after September and then are usually a year behind so may want to wait until then.

The GEN 6 unit in my '12 is dealer only for install. They have to load the map updates through a Firewire 800 port near the skinny pedal. The USB key mentioned for that generation is only for the licensing code that allows the dealer to load the maps into the vehicle. In Eurasion markets I see vendors sell the updated hard drive that has to be swapped out of the rear of the nav unit... old school platter drive in the 10-13 models.
