Manifold sealant required?

I asked this a few weeks back with no takers....

Is there a need to use any sort of sealant on the threads of the various vacuum stems on the intake manifold? If so, what do you use?

I have never used a sealant. I did however observe as I was installing a 3 way filter into an FJ60 the other day that Toyota puts some kind of blue sealant on the threads of their new filters. Don't know what is, but I could sure feel it giving the manifold a good 'bite' on the way in.
