I'm at wits end with the brakes in my wife's truck. Sometimes if accelerating out of a full stop, the truck will not accelerate and feels like the breaks are locked up. When this happens the pedal is too hard to push down on. I've not run across this problem before and can't figure it out..... I'm assuming this has to be something with the booster... right? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I assume you are talking about the '92 4Runner? If not, which truck, model, year, etc?

Have you jacked up the truck and tried spinning the wheels by hand to see if they are dragging?

If the rear brakes (not breaks) are dragging, it could be that the linkages behind the drum are sticking, particularly the e-brake parts. Maybe back off the shoe adjusters, pull the drums and look for issues.

Yes this is the 92.... I can't isolate the problem and it's left my wife stranded twice. It happens out of nowhere and goes away without explanation. I just redid the back drums last night and they are definitely put together correctly. Does any of this sound like a booster problem?

sticking wheel cyclinder or caliper!!!!!! not the booster

Rear e-brake alum block is messed up and the steel arm sticks and will not release.
This assumes that she uses the e-brake.
Replace the alum block, or use a file and clean it out, requires that you take the rear brakes apart.

That's the first thing I thought of, but 2nd gen 4Runner rear axles don't have these blocks. The cable passes thru the backing plate at an angle, no bellcranks.

I assumed it couldn't be the calipers b/c it never pulled in one direction when stopping.... Hasn't locked up in a few days but when you press the brake you have decent stopping power and then the pedal will rise up back towards you and has full breaking power....... What the hell is going on here:confused: The only thing I haven't replaced is the front calipers and I guess I'll try that next....
