The M101's get a bad rap as being too heavy and big for trail rigs. There aren't many trailers out there that weigh less than 1000lbs, even a utility trailer like most of us have sitting around. Now, behind a lower hp FJ40 or a CJ maybe so AND depending on how much you are needing haul one of the M416 style of trailer might make more sense for heavy trail use behind a smaller vehicle. With the FJC I have 240+ HP and it's a bit wider anway so it works. I wouldn't hesitate to pull an M101 behind a 40 on mild trails and sure wouldn't give it a second thought behind a 60 etal.

If you are searching out goat trails in a 40 then smaller might be better but for most of us our 'trail' work is mostly light stuff getting to a camp site or something along those lines.

Just my 2 cents and not worth a penny more.

Let me add a little backing up information. There is a pin you put in to stop the brake from working, it blocks the movement of the lunette. Make sure you remove it, once done backing up.

No s***. I'll have to try that next time :D

So a 2f powered fj60 can handle a M101 in mild off road conditions?

I've never owned a 60 so I can only say that it would be no different from pulling any other 900-1100lb trailer if setup like mine. The FJC has a tow rating of 5000lbs, the 60 only 3500 but that wouldn't really make any difference if you are pulling a trailer and 500lbs of gear. I don't see why you would need to be in 4 low all the time.

If you have ever pulled something like a 6x10 flat bed utility trailer they will weigh 700-1000lbs depending how exactly how they are built.... for reference.

I am going to look at a 4x8 utility trailer Saturday. Metal frame and fenders but wood floor and sides. We are a family of 6 so extra space for camping is a must. I figure I can build or have built a metal tub later. I want a military style trailer but avg $750 in my area.
