All of my door rattle a bit when closing....the culprit is loose retainer clips. I have the retainer clips ordered but have been unable to find a diagram or instructions to remove the panels and replace the clips.

Any one with a diagram or shop manual on how to tackle this problem? If I monkey around blindly; I'll break something.

Thanks,

Todd H,

Assue your wanting to remove the inner door liners?

If so they are pretty easy, 2-3 bolts on the bottom can be easily felt running your hands along the rubber seal.

There are 2 to 3 plastic pins, push the middle in and they pull out easily enough. I've found pulling the trim away a little pops them loose.

Window controls have a metal clip at the front, push that in and leaver it up at that end. Remove the screw otherwise hidden revealed when you take it out.

Where the door opener is use a thin flat blade or knife to pop the cover and remove the screw. There is a retaining clip top and bottom of that plastic trim above the pivot point of the handle, pop the top and bottom to remove it.

Once that is done the door trim should lift up and away from the door, disconnect any electrical connections and there you go.

I'm good on the inner door. The question is for how to remove the lower plastic molding on the outer door of the lx470.

Thanks for the reply.

All I can say is good luck getting those off. Those are secured with several clips and adhesive. You will likely have best luck with a long clip removal tool and a lot of patience. If you search a Lexus parts website, the parts diagram shows 28 clips on the front door and 18 on the rear.

the lower clips that held the cladding on my 99 were rusted badly and basically fell apart at a gentle tug. Do you see any evidence of rust particles falling out when you jiggle the cladding? If so you may be in the same boat as me... sorry.
I ended up removing all of the rusted retainer clips and plan on doing a little silicon adhesive once spring warms up... tmi

No rust thank goodness. All California, then Southern truck all it's life.

Had some time finding the clips, got from fasteners and clips.com (# 90468-12074) or Auceco # 21697. Best deal at 9.50 per 25.

Since I will need ~ 50 for each side from the above post.

I've searched for bolts and rivets and found none. The plastic clips are held on on the lower panel by a metal clip (no rust!) that is held on the topside by double sided tape.

Still gotta find a Lexus parts diagram.....looking.
If anyone has a link I'd be appreciative.

Thanks for all the responses!

Todd H,

Yeah, there are lots of clips on the LX panels. I have removed the paneling on one of my LX's as I wanted to see what the rust situation looked like. Thankfully there was none on mine (Southern Cali truck). I am going to have mine welded closed and then Monstaline over that lower section.

Rust under the cladding was non-existent....I bought all the clips and fasteners....only did the drivers door. Lexus/Toyota clips.com?

Still rattles a bit....somewhat less than the others. But it won't come off doing 80 down I-20. I don't think it's much better..

I will be glad to look up the parts #s and where I got the...

Was about 40 dollars in all. Had to scrape 2 sided foam tape off and reapply some....slowest part of the job...I may do the other doors this spring!

Pm me if more info needed.

Thanks,

Todd H

I took mine off and applied 3M trim adhesive to keep them snug. I think double sided trim tape would work as well.

Did anyone take any pics of the clips and the interior of any panels? I haven't yet found a thread that fully describes how to remove the panels and I don't want to damage by just yanking. The FSM implies a little heat across the top and front/back sides (loosen adhesive), then just pop it off. The way I read the diagrams the clips are like those found on interior panels and so one of the plastic panel pry-bar type things should work - yes?.

Here are some pictures I took pre-bedliner. Might help

Bringing up an older thread, sorry for that but I am wondering how hard it was to remove the body cladding? I'm contemplating replacing the driver's side cladding to include the front and back doors and the rocker panel. I have never done anything like this before but I'm semi handy. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this, I would appreciate your input.

Thanks,

Anyway you still have these part numbers for the clips from a few years back? Going through doing my passenger front door on 2001 LX

90468-12074 - was answered above, but there appear to be a few types in the panel. I'll report back with my solution for wrapping this up and putting my door back together.

I'm in the middle of cladding hell, and all my steel clips have rusted away and are not listed as an orderable part. I may make my own clips from galv. sheet metal and use 3M trim tape to attach to the door. This is a pix swiped from eBay showing the metal clips I don't have. More visible on the white background in the 2nd photo.

Any other suggested solutions? I don't want to buy used cladding just for the clips.

I wish you luck. I remember once upon a time wondering "hmmm, wonder if the cladding could go..." Now I see that the answer is "maybe- if you're OK welding up 200 holes and repainting everything."
