I got an ebay pop tester but it was a piece of crap, the pressure gauge was way off, it did not stutter, it did give the spray pattern but that is not all that is required. A quality one would be a bosch one. I did see the merc guy selling his wares too.

But the further research I did, beyond doing it once every 100k km, keeping the tester calibrated and stopping it from gumming up, the range of shims, etc, I calculated that it is not too bad to employ a diesel specialist, you may need him for a pump one day. One which is not too greedy, they do exist, usually working on bulldozers.

You can still install them yourself if you desire the hands on experience.
