Dear Members,

I'm quite new to this site and forum, though i've been following posts since i bought a 80series early last year.

A brief history.. I've been on the hunt for a diesel 80 series for quite a while and came across one last year and bought it. It 's a 1997 HDJ81 JDM export, mostly stock. Winch Bullbar, BOSCH Halogens, 33" BFG AT TA KO's, Factory lockers, FR and RR. No CDL Switch, Full Time 4WD. Polybush all round, Monroe Shocks, King Springs. Its got a 1HD-FT and A442F tranny.

I've been reading about Big End Bearings on these engines and have seen a lot of posts on 1HD-T's but not many on 1HD-FT's. I'm a bit concerned on oil pressure and a slight knocking sound, almost like a diesel knock.

The oil pressure is fine when it's cold, ie the needle is well above the high mark at idle. When the oil gets warm, the needle drops to almost between the first 2 marks on the gauge. I'm using 15W40 Shell Oil and am in the equator region in Kenya, East Africa. Ambient temperatures are around 30Deg C.

I've checked the valve clearances, a real pain, but got there after 3 hours under the under. It doesn't spit out a single drop of oil out of the filler when running.

I bought it with tempered milage so am not sure what its clocked, but i'm guessing around 300k Kilometers.

Please advise if the Big Ends could be causing the oil pressure to drop, or could it be the oil pump?

Are there any other tests to narrow down to the culprit?

Would appreciate some feedback from the abundance of knowledge in this forum.

Thanks,

First, the gauge is not a good place to get an accurate reading on the oil pressure. You really need to hook up a gauge that gives you an accurate reading in psi, and then compare that to the specs in the manual.

The BEB issues on the HD-FT have supposedly been fixed, but there is at least one member on here that posted about bad BEBs in that engine, so doing them is certainly not a bad idea. However, make sure you measure them before putting in new ones. If your crank has been ground, you might need oversize bearings.

I don't understand that. Do you mean there is no oil squirting out of the oil filler hole on the valve cover when the engine is running? If so, it should not. That tells you nothing.

The oil pumps are very robust on these, and unlikely to go.

cheers,

.

Thanks,

What it does at idle is not that imortant and never a good indicator of whats going on. Its at higher rpms where you need oil pressure.
As Tapage recommended, only a quality pressure gauge will tell you. I think the test requires a minimum of 39 psi at 2500 rpm for 2 mins.
Good pressure would be 50 psi+ ,and fully warmed up.

Oil pressure from bad bearings usually causes the gauge to sky high when cold then drops away to nothing when driving.
Australian owners were still reporting bearing problems with the 1HD FTE,which was the engine after yours.

Dont think so, Never heard such rubbish.

Never discount something you have never heard of as rubbish. There are strong suspicions that the weak coatings on the bearings were not the only reason Beb failed on earlier models.
Whilst the bearing failures were not as common as earlier engines ,there were still reports of them happening on the 1hdfte.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice. I will hook up a mechanical gauge and post the results.

Hopefully work on it over the long weekend ahead.

Have a great Easter everyone.

Any progress on this issue? I am having the same issue and I'm hoping it is the gauge or sender. I've got a UK gauge cluster on a AUS drive train installed in a US FZ80,
