Pretty sure they are the same, when you pull up the part numbers they match?

I noticed you front brakes have a directed vent on the splash guard. Are the brakes (calipers, rotors and master cylinder) the same as North American spec fzj80's? Thanks

The side mirror retract also acts as a tiny miniscule protection to discourage busy fingers from ripping the mirror out of the housing when your cruiser is parked and you are away from it.

One other tiny thing you might not yet have noticed is that your turn signal turns on a small light on the side you are turning into. It helps you see where the edge of the road is in unlighted places.

Have a caution when driving at night. The Japanese headlights spray left and the U.S.A. spray right. You'll be blinding a fair amount of oncoming traffic without meaning to.

Great info, thanks;

I noticed yesterday there are actual ice cube trays in the cooler...............

I've never used the ice cube tray, though I have it. I thought it a bit much, but the cooler is great and from a long trip, can keep your drinks cold overnight. I've also never used the cruise control, though in testing it automatically compensates for uphill by giving more fuel.

Aww man,

I agree.

Can you imagine how many Californians would sell their FJ80s and FZJ80's if we could get these here?

We are still stuck with our slow 92 FJ80 with the 3Fe.

So what ever transpired? Is it possible? At all? I would love to have diesel.. and i think i'd try to do what it takes to get one of these legal.

As far as I know, no way to import a JDM.

That being said, some guy in Washington has a couple JDMs, mostly 61s.

Wonder how he did that?????

Rob

either a vin swap, or he managed to get them in on through with an RI using the preapproved list. The body on a 61 might be argued as equivalent to a 60 and 60s were preapproved before the restriction on RHD versions of LHD vehicles, so I think he would "only" need to figure out EPA.

Robb, what do think it would take in labour and extra parts to do a total swap of an HDJ81 powertrain and all accesories into a US registered FJ80 (I guess you could throw the interior trim in as well if it matched the dash)? That would probably work for those americans who don't lve in california.

For MPG followers, I've just returned from a 3,500 mile drive in my diesel through Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and France. Drove slowly most of the time 60-65mph on freeways, up to 70-80 for overtaking (and one lap of the Nurburgring !! in Germany) and averaged 33mpg (UK gallons) for the entire trip. Mix of freeway and city driving, but conservatively driven. 33mpg is about 28mpg in US measurements I think. In metric, it was around 8.5 litres per 100 kms, with a best recorded of 8.25 (34mpg).

Torque really kicks in at 2000 rpm, but it's a bit flat below that. Having said that, it's quite easy to poodle around town between 1000-2000 rpm, and pulls nicely from 900 rpm in fourth gear. The gears are widely spaced, except 4th to 5th is quite closely spaced for some reason.

For me, the diesel is an absolute pleasure to drive, and the gearbox is like a hot knife through butter when warm. I used to be very anti-diesel until I steered the cruiser and instantly fell in love with it's torquey / relaxed character.

The turbo make a light whistling noise when accelerating hard from 2000 rpm.

Radd Cruisers, if possible could you please take individual on their own pics of the ice cube tray, the cover over the ice cube area and the thing in the bottom of the cooler??

Would like to know what I'm looking for!!

Thanks :)

The power train when available through G&S Cruiser I will venture to say a complete package cost is around 10K, you would have to contact Sheldon to confirm.

The hard part is making sure you have all the bits and pieces for a proper swap, battery trays, air cleaner, wiring harness etc.

Install is ball parking around 4Kto 5K depending on exhaust and other items.

Getting your hands on a left hand dash would be another challenge.

I think the only problem with one particular install was the tac in the dash would not work and they swapped it out for the diesel model tack. Otherwise not need to swap out the dash and all the accessories.

WOW, best numbers I have ever heard of out of a 81, I am impressed. My guess is the 24 valve head and five speed add up to those impressive fuel numbers.

Those pics are some of the better ones I can take.

The cooler is about a fore arm deep and when you open the lid you will see a small door facing the front of the truck. Slide it up and you will see the smallish ice cube trays.

It really keeps the beverages very very coool.

Sorry, what I meant was, import a complete HDJ81 and then do a complete swap into a US reg FJ80.

Basically add the landed cost of an hdj81 that does not need to be in pristine body condition (say C$10,000) to the cost of a sound but high miles us registered 3FE FJ80 (C$5000) to the labour to gut the engine compartment in one and switch everything over including the interior trim, seats, and maybe even axles (???). In the end you have a US registered left hand drive FJ80 which has a 1hdt and many cool JDM features, plus a JDM RHD shell and the guts of a 3FE 80 left over. You could merge those two together for a Canadian RHD 3FE cruiser with a great body and frame, or you could part the leftovers out... Let's then assume you could sell the JDM RHD 3FE orphan truck for C$8000 after putting in the labour to drop the 3FE in it.

now how much do you need to recover for the US titled diesel truck to make this whole exercise worthwhile?

and sorry the answer is C$7,000 plus labour for the two swaps plus time and effort and ownership costs to locate the two vehicles, plus whatever additional incidental maintenance on the trucks you do. I am going to guess that near US$20,000 is the answer. Would anyone pay US$20,000 for a LHD 1hdt us registered truck with JDM accessories?

Funny question, there is a 80 series with a swapped in 1HD-T in the for sale section at 19000.00.

I looked long and hard at a 60 series swap, you are talking about grafting in the entire fire wall including wapper motor support, plus upper area in front of windshield where the wipers are mounted.

That said, there is a company in Vancouver doing these swaps, seem to have it down to a art. Not sure of the cost.

hmm. looks like he sold it and had a lot of interest too.

Rob, I thought you had done an 80 diesel swap. must have disremembered.

I got as far as removing the engine and a big part of the wiring harness, the job was plagued with numerious bits and pieces missing to do the job correctly.

Reinstalled the gas engine and helped sell of the engine.

So no, I have not done a install.
