I'm a bit of history nut, but until Nov flood I had no idea the amount of reclamation had gone on in Sumas Valley lower mainland area. Obviously before my time
and my ancestory is Fraser Lake / Omineca area and West Vancouver since and from the early 50's. I won't clutter this up but just to show some really interesting stuff.
For us map freaks as welll.

An Oct. 1, 1889 map of New Westminster District by the federal Department of the Interior showing Sumass Lake (i.e., Sumas or Semá:th Lake) in the Fraser Valley, which was drained in the 1920s.

Yep, too many mosquitos and the desire for more farmland led to the draining. The pumps still run 24/7 to keep it drained! :)
