So, I found a 2010 LX in California. I'm having it shipped to NY. The truck has low miles for the year.
The truck looks like it was dealer serviced from purchase up to now. Which is great. I don't see any record of a new radiator. Do I mention that before going forward?
Also wondering if there is really anything else to look up before buying something sight unseen and not have driven it?
I'll be working with a dealer near me to finalize the deal. Is there a tool kit / tire change kit that comes with the LX?
Any input is much appreciated.

Tire change kit is a jack in the rear passenger side and a toolkit in the tailgate. The tire winch stuff is in the tailgate

You didn’t say how many miles. It should have had regular AHC services every 60k or so.
Ok, which is a fluid flush correct? So the radiator isn't a recall?

ok thanks

Radiator shoulda been a recall (IMHO), but now they have a updated part that supposedly fixed the original issue (we think). Just throwing loose figures around, also depends on age, but radiator has been know to go around 120k miles, water pump somewhere similar. Even if they don't fix for you, might be something you can use to negotiate price. At the very least get them to take a pic of the top of the radiator so you can see if it has this crack forming:

Other thing you can do is go and create a free "Lexus Owners" account, enter the VIN number, and you can get all the service records.
Curious, how many miles and what year is the truck?

Thanks. Yes I'm a member of the Lexus owners site. It has dealer records of the vehicle until 1 year ago. Then nothing and no radiator replacement recorded.
I still like the deal. $33k 70k miles no rust.

The service records all California? what year is it?

10

I dig it, easier time with the 2010 front end if you want to add a bumper. Quite low miles for the age, price sounds fair. Age wise (even with the low miles) radiator could def be an issue, not a deal breaker at all, just something to either negotiate, or just know your gonna need to do soon. I think its around $1200 to have Toyota do it, about half or less to do yourself. Pretty simple job, I've done mine and another guy's recently. Makes sense to do water pump and hoses and thermostat at the same time as the radiator has to come out for those

Also looking at a 15 LX with 75k miles for around 38k plus tax. Which is about $10 k more and it lives in the north east.

If you can swing it. This is the better option IMHO. 2013-2015 is the sweet spot. That’s a great price too. Just look for rust.

Same body style. Let me ask what does the 13-15 LX have for $10k more.
The 2015 must have a little surface rust under it with 75k miles.
The other thing I think about is $40k and no warranty.

I'm not an LX expert, i'm more familiar with all the Toyota model year differences (front camera, bluetooth audio streaming). I imagine they are similar. 1 thing i will say for the extra $10k is your getting a truck thats about 1/2 as old, which does make a difference. Some things just wear out over time, so i'd personally rather pay a bit more for a truck that's 5 years newer even if the mileage is similar. All that assuming the rust is not an issue. used LX's are easy to find compared to LC's, I'm sure you'll find one that check's all the boxes. If you are buying an east Coast truck, it'd be good if you could go see in person to evaluate the under side. I bought my 200 from a Toyota Dealer in NYC when it was 5 years old, had light surface rust, and at that time i lived there and was able to check it out. Only thing i will say is even with light surface rust, about 75% of the upgrades I've since done, rust has caused issues. Seized parts, bolts breaking off ect. At this point I've mostly changed out most of that, and now live in the desert so rust won't continue to be an issue for me. You live in NY, so even if you get a rust free truck, 5 years from now it's gonna have some level of rust no matter what.

Everything @DPA200 mentioned and I will add a few....

- Multiple tech improvements (Color Display, Updated MTS/CRAWL)
- 5 years of subtle platform updates. This, to me, is the most important. Toyota keeps the platform the same, but it's always improving.
- Depreciation will be less than the 2008-2011 models.

I wouldn't think of it as a $40K vehicle w/o a warranty, I would think of it as a 85K vehicle for $40K. Granted, you will likely need to do some preventative maintenance, but that should factor into your decision on either vehicle. If you cannot afford an occasional $1000 PM, I would say stick with something less like on older 4runner or GX. Honestly, the GX is a great alternative if paying 40K is huge barrier.

If you have the choice of "surface rust" or "no rust" and the no rust is 1-2K more - go rust free. It's money well spent. There are too many rust free options out there if you spend the time.

Yes it makes perfect sense.
Rust plays a big part, and I tend to keep cars along time, have a garage, and drive only about 10k miles a year.
Any purchase would need some maintenance and a new set of tires and rims.
Not sure I care so much about the screen upgrades so much but can you explain the Updated MTS/CRAWL ?

Two more crawl speeds, turn assist, hill start, and updated logic.

Marketing Snip...

"The updated Crawl Control feature provides optimum throttle and brake modulation when maneuvering over rough, uneven or difficult surfaces. The new Turn Assist feature also helps by tightening the turning circles by adding more brake force to the inside rear wheel. The new Multi-terrain Select also allow you to optimize performance by choosing from five types of terrain. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) helps provide additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle from rolling back when your foot moves from the brake to the gas pedal on a steep incline or slippery surface."

I'll 2nd what @tincan45 said, have you considered a GX at all? Not saying it's exactly the same, but quite a capable vehicle, and much much easier to find in great condition on the used market at the lower price end. My wife bought one about 6 months ago, and it was a joy to shop for, there were so many low mileage, 4-5 year old, clean, 1 owner, lexus serviced options to choose from. If i didn't have my 200 and have all the work I'd already invested, a GX is what I'd drive.
