The strike anywhere might be out-law-dated but a reasonable alternative that I employ is to cut wood slivers about the shape of a match stick but a bit longer and then dip them in Vaseline. Let is soak in by placing in a warm place, but away from fire. Store them in a tight container along with a flick lighter or flint and steal. They will ignite easily and, certainly, won't be as dangerous.
