I'm looking for suggestions for campgrounds within 2 1/2 or 3 hours of Santa Rosa. I'm taking my two boys 4 and 9. No heavy wheeling, just a fun campground with some water to fish and/or play in - and hopefully not full of an unsavory crowd.

Considering Pillsbury, Berryessa and the coast.

There are some great spots off of the Eagle Lakes Exit on Hwy 80 just past Nyack. About 3 hours from you. Whelling is mild to wild, what ever you want. Wheeling to camp sites is mild. This area is the entrance to the Fordyce Trail.

Pillsbury is way fun, lots of mild wheeling and the lake is super warm fun for the kids to swim in.We like the sunset campground for camping, but there are tons of camp areas out there.Best to be close to the water, cause I'm sure it's real hot up there now.We usually go at the end of May.

So to escape the lower elvation heat the Sierra's are always the best bet.But the higher lakes are always freezing.Pinecrest and Tahoe are great lakes for a nice swim.Endless areas, get on reserve amer. and look at all the campgrounds.Have fun and enjoy with the kids!
