hi guys just wanting some input on what is a good reasonably priced 4wd wagon with good towing capacity. I am in New Zealand and there are lots of surfs for cheap and I could buy two ie a tidy one and a donor but I am concerned they are light on power. Or I could buy a landcruiser probably a prado or real old model but I am concerned that will be costly on maintenance. What are people's opinions?

Lol I don't know if you are being serious but this vehicle is not even available in nz. Even if it was you would need a special class of licence to toe anything reasonable as in nz the max gross vehicle mass is 6000 kg and max gross trailer mass is 3500kg so minus the vehicle of approx 3900 kg you can only tow 1200kg

Fixed for us metric challenged 'mericans. :hillbilly:

Not sure I understand your math, but that's OK. Cruisers are much better at towing due to shear weight, but there are better choices for the types of loads you're talking about. What are you towing?

I am a builder so I will be towing a trailer for my tools and at times materials maybe a horse float. Probably on average around 1ton if a horse float or maybe some metal more but all braked. I would like to have the option to tow a full 3.5ton if need be. So this is all metric ton which is maybe 2200 pounds.

You're looking at the wrong rigs if you want to pull 3.5 tonnes.

This.

Definitely no-go with a Hilux, too light to haul that kind of weight. Even the newer ones are only rated for 4700-5000lbs

Some of the LCs (newer 70 series and 200 series) are rated to tow that kind of load. But, defeats your “cheap” requirement:meh:

I think Americans have an inflated idea of what is needed to tow stuff around. Mostly this is because of the other, idiot, Americans they have to share the road with and the remainder is because driving while towing is not taught in Driver's Ed classes. You only get that kind of training if you go for a commercial type license. Slow down, take it easy, and don't let the guy (one of the aforementioned idiots) trying to pressure you into going faster by following you at exactly 1.253 mm's succeed.

That said, I tow with a 12 valve CTD because it handles anything I'll ever need to tow.

I'll venture a guess that NZ has rules about towing weights that are comparatively restrictive. Might start there. Might end up being one of the "triangle things", i.e. can have high trailer weight, cheap tow rig, or be legal when towing: Pick any two.
