Looking for a ride for my son and me from Naniamo to Campbell River in early June

I have spent a good portion of my life (37 years)on Cortes Island every summer for 2 or 3 months a year. I have a small cabin on the island and I take my 8 year old son there every summer, a tradition with my parents when I was less than a year old.I plan on living there 7-9 months a year when I get to a point I can do it....hopefully my wife will join me

I just had spinal fusion surgery and the 37 hour trip this last summer was murder on my back and no I can't imagine what it would be like. Flying is actually about the same price and since my boat and spare tuck is already on my property, I thought we would fly up this summer. We would fly into Vancouver and take a bus to Tsawwssen and walk on the ferry to Duke Point (Naniamo).

I can get a flight early enough from California to make the 9 AM sailing from the main land but I need to make the 3:30 or 5:30 from Campbell River to Quadra to catch the last ferry to Cortes. There are bus connections from the airport/Duke Point to CR, but it gets into Campbell River right at 5:30 so if it is running late or I can't run fast enough to the ferry, my son and I will be sleeping in the waiting room of the ferry terminal in Heriot Bay (Quadra).

So, maybe there is a fellow Muder that could help us out and give us a ride between Naniamo and Campbell River. I'd obviously fill up your tank for gas.

It is still a long way out before this summer, but I thought I'd post up my situation to see if I could work out a mudship instead of carrying parts, it would be my son and me.

damn, that's a helluva long way off from summer! I don't even know what I'm doing next weekend let alone next June!

That said, as long as it isn't the boat show weekend ( usually first weekend in June) I could probably work something out. Wife has some friends up there to visit and maybe make it a camping weekend or something.

Pretty good friend of mine is a Cortez resident, the mad dentist who used to have his clinic on a 55' Herrschoff Ketch...sailed with him in the south pacific many many many many moons ago...

But yeah, long way off for me to plan, but I'm sure between the lot of us on the island here we won't leave you stranded at the duke point ferry...

Thanks for the response. It is a long way off, but if I was traveling alone, I'd play it by ear. Since my son is with me, I'm a bit more methodical in my planning so I know the situation is safe and as stress free as possible. I would even thumb it and if it got dark, hike a mile into the woods, and sleep if I was alone. Won't do that with him.

As for the Mad Dentist, I know him well. As a matter of fact, I dock my boat up to his floating office every day. He was just moving to Naniamo (I think?) when I was leaving last summer. Talk to him a few times a week.

I'll keep posting information on my schedule as time gets nearer.

Thanks, Dan

I never thought about that. I flew into Seattle and took a float plane right to Cortes one year, but didn't think the airport in Naniamo is big enough for international flights. Thanks for the suggestion.

He can drill a tooth when the ferry waves roll in and not poke a hole through someone's mouth. Know if they got settled in the new place?
