I appreciate your opinions on why you should have a spare tire carrier. I'll share my thoughts/opinions on not having one.
First, looks. I go back and forth on this one. I like the look, but at the same time, it's very over-bearing. The tire carrier is all you see. I like the back of the 100 the way it is. The Slee without the carrier is more stealth, especially after I paint match it to the trim. Again, this just a difference of opinion.
Second, visibility. I don't like the tire carrier because it blocks a large portion of the rear window restricting the view.
Third, it's in the way when getting in and out of the rear area. How much of a pain this is, is really subjective to each owner. I had a swing out from Currie Enterprises on my Wrangler years ago, and I got tired of opening and closing all the time. It's even worse now with 2 kids in the 100.
Fourth, where to locate the spare. I have raised the spare tire mounting bracket underneath the vehicle and used a narrower spare tire. I am also working on a skid plate to cover the spare. I like this option because a spare is rarely used and this is the most out of the way place for me.
As far as using the space under the vehicle for something else. I don't plan on adding a secondary fuel tank or water tank. It's just not something I'm interested in having. An air tank is not really for me either; a c02 tank stored in the cargo area is more than adequate for me. Underneath, the spare is out of the way and is rarely used.
If I ever do any more serious expedition type wheeling, I will get a roof-rack. I can always throw an additional spare up there if I need to.
As far as antenna and light mounts go, I prefer roof mounted antenna's for cb's and rear lights can be mounted on my bumper too. I actually plan on adding a couple of rear facing fogs pretty soon.
Cost is relative. Some people believe it is worth it, some don't. To me, the additional $700 is better spent on something else.
I will say this, no matter which one you decide on, they are really well built. The recovery points are very beefy. The fit and finish are nice. Slee has built a very nice rear bumper and has given us all of the options that we have asked for. Thanks Christo!
