Looking at an 80 and it does not have lockers but is low miles and a good price (For out west)

My question is......
Would you rather have a really nice 80 without lockers but low mileage for a good price?

Or a higher mileage 80 with lockers for a higer price?

I know this has probably been covered ad nauseam. But I could not find a thread that discussed it.

low mileage unlocked, you can add the lockers later.

You don't have a Land Cruiser?

Really depends on what you are going to use the vehicle for.

I was looking for the cleanest low mileage 96'-97' 80 I could find in the color scheme I wanted. This vehicle is primarily used for family trips and crossing interstate mountain passes in winter so lockers were not critical for me.

Reliability is #1 in my book. Do you have a maintenance history available for either vehicles?

Good luck with the decision,

Russell

Option 3 of waiting for a good low-mileage rig with lockers would be the best, but in absence of that, I would still go with a higher mileage rig with lockers, assuming you are comfortable with its current level of maintenance. Adding lockers to these rigs easily approaches $3k when everything is said and done, and you can spread out a lot of PM and repairs for that kind of $$.

Incomplete poll.

Locked vs Unlocked would be also take price into account. Since my primary purpose for buying a Land Cruiser would be to enable me to drive to remote locations, the lockers are a requirement. If there are 2 vehicles that I am considering, the unlocked one would need to be at least $3,000 cheaper to get to a baseline condition (includes purchase price and price to get maintenance to a base point.) I would then use that $3,000 to acquire ARB's and regear at the same time.

I'm sure it has been said before, but....

"Lockers will get you in farther to the point where you might need some serious help to get out or worse." (May not be an exact quote, but I believe it has the point.)

Now would I like to have lockers, most definately. Would I pass up an oppurtunity to buy a really nice unlocked one for the right price no. Take the 1800.00 (front locker 700.00, air pump 400.00, rear Aussie 250.00, 450.00 for labor and labor is probably high) your going to save and put lockers in the lower mileage good buy if you even really need lockers.

I have not had to have lockers yet, I am going to put a 250.00 Aussie in the back of mine anyway. Been real close to needing them a time or two.

My 2 cents,
Chad P.

Wait, you gotta tell what you mean when you say high and low.. I would do the following, come up with a baseline for what you want.. For me it was 95-105k for $10,000 on a 96 or 97...

For every10,000 miles over or under that I added $500 or took $500 off what I was willing to pay.. Loskers will run you $2,500 so if it's got 50,000 miles less for the same price then it's a toss up if you ask me..

With that said both my rigs are locked, one with 200k and the other with 109k... To me, I can't tell you what rig I'm driving if I didn't look at the color.... Miles wouldn't scare me, but if I could do it over again I wouldn't have cared as much about them on the lower mile rig.. I would hold out, money is tight for people, the market is EXTREEMLY bad and Cruisers aren't selling..

It's 150% a buyer market so hold out for wha tyou want...

It all depends.

Are you a statistician?

I plan to use the truck in the same capacity as my 60 (Off road to reach remote spots) Plus, I will be building it up for remote self supporting travel. I have decided that lockers are a requirement in my next vehicle.

Thanks all for your input.

My opinion pretty much will echo what Beowulf said.

I'd lean more towards the clean, low miles, unlocked if I could negotiate a great deal, then add the lockers in later and regear at the same time.

If you're think you need lockers, you'll likely want to get bigger tires, which means you'll probably want to regear...might as well slide down that slippery slope all at once.

Where the heck do you live? Certainly not in the Pacific NW. These things are still selling. Not just that, but the values are just starting to come down and they go in a hurry. When I bought mine last summer, the only rigs that seemed to reflect a huge buyer's market were the banged up rigs with 200K miles and sketchy maintenance. Anything you would be interested in went quick and for the asking price or damn near. Everytime I see somebody from across the country talking about a low mile rig with lockers and in good shape for <$10K, I wince.

Still, there are enough of these rigs around that you shouldn't have to pick between lockers, miles, and a good price. As long as you aren't in a hurry, you should be able to find just what you are looking for at a fair price.

That is exactly what I am thinking. I am not in a hurry, thus I am going to hold out.

My list of wants is as follows

96-97
Locked
From the Southwest

My list of items I would like, but could live without
No Running boards
No roof rack
White paint.

I have nothing but time.

What do you guys consider high milage? Is 137k high for a 95? What's would you consider good deal for price range?

High mileage for me is 250k and above. A good price for a 95 w/137k around my area is $5-6k. I paid $8k for my 94 w/150k miles on it, not a great price but couldn't find the good price cruisers that I wanted.
