this sux...

So, I checked my axle code yesterday on the donor vehicle - I believe, if I have it all correct, that it has 7.5" diffs, with 4.30 gearing... could be wrong - will spin the wheels to count when I get time. I haven't checked the gearing on my 86 yet, but I'd be willing to bet it's 4.10s. So some regearing will most likely be in order - 8" refers to the size of the ring gear in the dif. So will the 8" gearing fit in the housing of a 7.5" dif? Or am I definitely going to have to source new difs? (I'm definitely not going to swap both 7.5" 3rds onto the 86). Like I said, I could be wrong, but I'm going off of the axle code, on the plate under the hood, and interpreted by the info here: Toyota Differential Identification: Off-Road.com

I was considering holding off on doing all the dif work, to save $, and do it later, but it looks like I may be doing it now as well.

No 7.5's and 8's do not interchange.

What is your year, make and model? And gear code.

My axle code is F282 (although the second digit is super hard to read - I think it's a 2, and this makes sense - I'm going off a photo I took of it - I might see if I can dig up a magnifying glass or something and see for sure next time I'm over at the garage). This should mean F = 7.5" ring gear, 28 = 4.3 ratio, and 2 = 2 pinions.

I just went and checked my 86 - G292. Should be 8" dif with 4.1, and 2 pinion.

Please don't flame me for asking, but, if I run a maximum of 35s (possibly 33s), should I go with 4.56, 4.88 or 5.29? I have a 2lt-II, the little diesel, fwiw - I think these engines are lower reving then the 22r, but everybody seems to gear just the same - based off of tire size, not redline.

Also, will the 8" third bolt onto the axle, or is modification required?
