You guys are lucky. The used car lot guys here in Southern California are pretty firm on their pricing on FZJs and LXs. I've looked at a few, and the guys I've talked to wont budge more than a few hundred dollars off their asking prices, typically 14.5K to 15.5K for sub 100K mile rigs. For example, about a month ago, I looked at a locked 97 LX with 85K miles in nice shape overall but not without issues, e.g., mangled running board, inoperative antenna, soft brakes, a knuckle job in its future, etc. Guy wanted 15.9K and wouldn't take a penny less than $15.5K, even though it has been sitting on his lot for at least six months. It is still sitting there. Admittedly, I haven't looked at 150K plus mile rigs, but I suspect, at least in my market, these guys know what they can get for a particular rig and are willing to wait patiently to get their price.

Sub 100K always has a psychological price lift over 100K+ cars and dealers at auction usually avoid the over 100Ks for this reason. Look for a private party buy with just over the 100K and psychology is on your side. A good 97 should have about 110,000 miles on it now and in good top condition in Southern California can be got for about $12,000 max. I got my 97 collectors edition in Vallejo, really perfect condition, 106K with 12 months warranty ($1500) for $13,500 total last June. I also found a 97 LX450 in Manhattan Beach with 90K and a one lady owner for $12,000 but missed it. She said come get it Friday night, I said I'll come Sunday! Before I knew the market!

I just bought my 95 about a little over a month ago for $7500. I think it was a fair, not a great price. It has 124,000 and is not locked. For that mileage, I also think it is around a $6000 truck. I'd keep looking.

Since it's in Spring, near Houston, I'd PM Tyler and ask him the name of the dealer he got his from. Make sure it's not the same dealer - read archives for details.

You have to keep one thing in mind. Most folks here are well versed in what the 80 market is and most of us are cheap so we wouldn't pay more than what we think a screaming deal would be. A dealer would be better off selling to some moron that doesn't know what he/she is buying and could get more from. So stick to your price and if you have to wait then you'll have to wait. No big deal.

Thanks Junk and everyone ....I know that I'm new here but everyone has been so helpful. It's not like that on most Boards I have been to. Normaly you have to prove yourself in some way before anyone will give any useful help or even reply. anyway...thanks again to everyone.

OK Junk, now it's time to tell him which week in the barrel is his. :D

Used car dealers kill me! I've got $8600 in it bull "S"! You can easily out smart him. Turn and run!

Do a search on ebay and see what comparable LC's have closed for and also look at KBB and NADA. Try and pay $1000 under that price and you are closer to the worth of the vehicle.

I will only buy used cars from individuals, never a dealer. I know everybody has to make a living but not by signing a name on a title and feeding me a line, trying to get me to pay $3000 over what he paid. "F" no!

My 93 with 165 was $4700 in fair shape, good mechanical and YES it had lockers......YAHOOOO! I lucked out on that one. Didn't even know about lockers when I bought it. (Ebay deal). Interior is a little ugly, cd and antenna don't work but everything else is good. Did the Birf's as PM (wasn't leaking) and some new tires and drives like a champ. Need to replace the Birf's at this point (some clicking) but it still made the 560 mile trek north without a problem.

Good luck on your search and be patient.

I agree it is too much for his market. Texas seems to have plentiful 80s and at reasonable prices. I bet it would sell in the Boise, Idaho area in less than a week at that price. There was a 94 FS in the paper with 198k on it for $10,400. I saw it parked in front of the people's house. It is gone now. Not sure what it sold for, but it is gone.
