Anybody know if there's an aftermarket tow-hitch that's a bolt-on replacement for this recovery hook on my lj78?

Not sure if the bolt pattern is the same but there are a few manufacturers of FJ40 receiver hitches. Maybe google FJ40 receiver hitch for options and specs. Good luck.

Are you looking for a 2” receiver, or just a tow ball? I looked (unsuccessfully) for a generic bolt on receiver and ended up settling on a pintle/2” ball combo. I don’t intend to use mine for much towing, but I can if I need to and it makes a great recovery point.
All the receivers I found were the 6 bolt versions that would stick down too far, requiring a hole cut in the bumper step. A simple route might be to have one welded up to fit; it would be a fairly quick job with a piece of 1/4” or 3/8” plate, a section of receiver tube and some gussets.

I think this is probably the route I'll go. I have the tools and steel up north I'd need to do it. It's not even for towing, I'd like to get one of those cargo gates that socket in to the receiver.

Would not shock me to learn that the bolt pattern is the same as that used in bolt-on pintle hitches. That pattern, at least in the 10k lbs range of hitches, appears to be 1.75" tall by 3.313" wide.
