Greetings All,

I'm considering purchasing a 1988 SR5 4 Runner (V6 unfortunately) to use as a winter vehicle. It has 235000 miles on it. My question is: How much life is left in this vehicle? I know this is hard to judge without knowing the service history, but let's assume that the oil was changed every 3,000 miles. I will just be driving it to work and back which is about a 30 mile round trip in the winter and to Lowes for some materials every once in a while. It appears to have a decent body/frame (has some rust on the front fender and rear wheel well) and is all stock. Two more questions: What would be a fair price for a vehicle in this condition? Can a 4x8 sheet of drywall/plywood be hauled with the seats/roll bar/top taken out? I always wanted one of these vehicles, but all that I've seen for sale are rusted very badly.

Thanks.

whats worse?
a unreilable or questionable truck you pay 3000 for with a v6?

or a unkillable (unless hilux works on it) 22RE rusted to s*** truck that costs half as much??

dont make a mistake.
either save your dough, or buy the rusty POS with the 22RE.

dont know about the wood.

a fair price for a rustbucket would be 1200-2000

I hauled a 4x8 sheet of .25" plate in my hilux. Im assuming itd be the same on a 4runner

As for price, idk. Pics help, so does maintance, etc.

A perfect 4runner with no rust, all maintance receipts, 4wd, newer tires and cold ac could go for 4000+ or as wristy said a rustbucket 1200-2000

The 88's were not under the headgasket recall like the 90-95 V6's, so you may have an engine that'll go to 300k+ with a little luck. The V6's are a pain to work on, gutless, inefficient, other than that they are great!

Welcome to Mud!!!! :flipoff2: Glad to have you!

Yes a 4x8 sheet will fit in the back, I usually just stick them in on the diagonal to fit inside the rollbar...

I had an 88 4Runner in high school and in college. With the tops off you can haul almost anything with proper tie downs. My engine was at 285,000 when we sold it and going strong. Besides, replacement 22RE's are a dime a dozen and real cheap. If you do most of the labor yourself it will be a cheap reliable truck.
