Letters or symbols

I'm a third owner of a BJ40 and my gauge shows symbols, after doing some Googling, i notice most of them have letters on the gauge. Can some one enlighten me which came first ?

Can't speak for US models, but my '80 HJ45 has letters, my '84 FJ45 has symbols (Australian market).
