LED light swap (lots of pics! dial-up=bad)

Well I drove around Houston trying to find a place to park that was nice and dark. Only places I could find were banks and schools. Don't wanna be parking in those at night...

I took some shots in my garage with the sun shield in place to try and block out light. And my camera didn't pick up all of the green. It's almost too green to me in person, almost needs some white tint. I'm picky. Anywho...

Check out what the 67-W15 does

Funny story. Thought my vacuum gauge broke. It was only reading 10. Turns out the LED bulb is longer than the incandescent was and was interfering with the gauge. Just had to pull it out a tad.

Again I know it doesn't look like my tach is lit up. But it is. I was using the low light setting on my point and shoot 10MP. It didn't capture the color or the brightness accurately. Maybe I'll try and photoshop a picture to get it looking the way I see it.

EDIT

added photoshopped picture above.

So the LED I put in the HVAC had a "hot spot" that was driving me nuts.

Solution: Turn the bulb around. This works because all the LED's point one way. Super low tech fix.

Before with "hot spot"

After with the bulb turned 180

I think I'll leave it that way. haha

Hopefully someone is reading this thread. I know it's old, but there is a ton of information in here!

I'm reading it. Appreciate you posting what works. LED lights are on my short list.

Yay. Thanks man.

Not to plug this thread but I just posted in my ROTM thread. I'll just post the same photos here with less chatter.

Another list of what is on the truck from superbrightleds.com

~ WLED-G-120 for speedometer, tach, multicluster, inclinometer, and 4WD.
~ 3022-G9 for HVAC light
~ BA9SF-G-12V for Sunpro vacuum gauge.
~ 67-W9-WV for license plate light
~ 67-W15 for front corners

Thanks for the list Kline! Will the ones for the front corners also work in the rear?

Thanks, Chuck

I'm pretty sure they would fit. Bases are the same. But do you really need that much brightness on the license plate? It'd look like you have neons under the back end haha. It already kind of does. Those bulbs in the front are longer IIRC. Putting bulbs in the license plate spots is sort of a PITA, I'm happy with the smaller bulbs :)

Maybe I missed it but what bulbs did you use on the dome lights?

I got them from FullyLitLED on this forum. Both are LED boards. They have a spring loaded festoon with wires to the board. Very bright and nice. Don't really know much more about them. I will research it more later today :)

Well, I admit that I'm an LED convert. I absolutely hate the cool white light they cast when used as replacement home light bulbs, but after examining the Pachinko parlor-like light show on my Odyssey's dash, all LED-lit, I relented. Incandescent light does give a nice warm retro glow, but it's just not visible enough.

I looked over the replacement chart earlier in this thread, but went a different route. WLED-xHP6-AC in cool white from superbrightleds.com for the 4 constant-on bulbs behind the instrument cluster (1 @ speedo, 1@ tach, 2 @ multi-gauge) and one for the projected light above the antenna/defrost/rear wiper rockers.

Then, a pair of 74-xHP3 in cool white - one each for the glove compartment and for the transmission indicator. This last one was most dramatic. The feeble little grain-of-rice incandescent in there was barely visible under the best of circumstances.

I also put a 3022-x4 behind the HVAC controls. I turned it to face backwards and stuck some silver mylar duct tape to the inside of the housing. It reflects and spreads the light beautifully and avoids a hot spot.

Finally, a pair of 3022-xHP4 in the dome fixtures, also in cool white. The prongs on the rear one take a bigger bulb, so they have to be bent in a bit. Be careful not to break the fragile wafer board to which they are attached.

I left all the other other indicators incandescent. These are only momentary, so they were in fine shape even after 24 years. Plenty bright since they backlight a screen. Total spend: $43. I kept everything cool white since it looks crisper and I find the colored LEDs over-saturate a bit. Very happy with the results - I even have to dim them down a bit in full dark.

To the dark side (not really) I see!

How about a picture? Never seen a cool white dash before!

Those huge LED lights fit in the instrument cluster? What haha. Dang.

Bumping this thread. Going to be attempting this very soon as well!

Anyone know if there's a different bulb number for the AC/heater controls. Seems like my original bulb is about 1 1/8" or 28mm or so and the 3022 is 31mm.

Did blue to match my stereo. Kinda corny to have blue paint and blue lights but whatever! Lol.

Did mine on my fj60 today. I apparently didn't order enough so only the cluster and engine /battery lights have been swapped. Now my battery/high beam light are not working. I have tried the bulbs in ever direction possible so polarity is not the issue. Any ideas? Still have to swap the bulbs for the tag. Then I hope to get my dome lights up and going.
