I have an 87 toyota pickup with a leaky windshield. I took the molding off and cleaned the rust (nothing major or penetrating, primed and painted. now i want to reseal the windshield. I found a couple areas where water might be coming in. I also want to seal the areas where rust was occurring.

Toyota calls for urethane caulk. Has anyone successfully used Butyl tape (i have some 3M) and stuff it in all the cracks? I spoke to 3M and they recommend a caulk 08609.

I don't want to do anything that will cause a headache down the road if i need to get new windshield.

I had a similar problem with my FJ62, although it was a gasket-style windshield. I found a Permatex product called "Flowable Silicone Sealant" in the parts store, it's pretty much the same thing as the clear silicone sealant except much thinner, it will "wick" it's way into cracks and leaks. Worked well for me, and it was easy.

It seems like it is not a good idea to use silicone from what i have read in several places.

I just spoke to a windshield installer. They said they don't ever reseal a windshield because more often than not, it just leaks again. They said it was probably better to use the butyl tape since it can easily be scrapped off in the future if necessary.
