Hey everybody

I have a leak under my dash that keeps filling up my radio with water, cool huh? I think it is the wiper arm thing. I have no idea how this seals and was wondering if anyone has a pic of how it comes apart. I am going over to SOR to check and see if I can find some info. If anyone has done anything with this before let me know what all it takes to take it apart. Thanks guys

Carm

are you thinking it's the pass side wiper pivot?

it's been awhile, remove the wiper arm, and it'll make sence, heck I took one a part, can't be that hard.

looked at my parts rig today, PICS later

the bolts come thru from the inside, that hold the pivot piece to the firemall. Looks like a rubber piece seals the rotating part.
Are your cowl drains clear? seems like the pivot is up high and protected.

Carmon, here are the pics. the pivot piece is bolted on from the inside, looks like the splined end rotates inside the longer metal tube. maybe the cowl vent is leaking? still make sure it doesn't look like the pics, should be clean so the water flows and drains out.

Thanks Paul, I am planning on getting in there this week. It should be easy if I can get in there. I will just cut out some rubber to shape and see if that seals it.

So still working on this leak. The leak is actually falling into the shaft the rotates the wiper. Any ideas on how toyota sealed that? Is it an o ring or something. It is doing it on both sides of the cruiser. Hopefully you can see the drop of water in the pic.

on another note, how do you get the arms off the wiper assembly?

Just saw your post. Mine is a 72 and I have the dash completely torn apart. If you still need pictures I can dig around and see if I can find the parts. They're here somewhere.

The whole shooting match is really pretty simple but not easy to work on. I had everything removed from the dash and it still got me good and mad getting it out. Can't imagine doing it with everything still under the dash. Basically you have the motor, the drive linkage, the drive shaft that goes to the wiper, and the sleeve that the drive shaft goes up through. I wasn't able to disconnect any of the arms and had to take everything as one piece to get mine out. Couldn't see the joints well enough to figure how they came apart and I'm glad I didn't try. If I remember correctly there were two or three places it is supposed to "snap" apart but good luck getting parts if something breaks.

The drive shaft goes up through the center of the sleeve to the outside of the vehicle. The sleeve has a flange that is held in place by three screws and had a flat rubber gasket to seal it. I was planning on using a good body sealer when it goes back together and that's all there is to the sleeve.

The drive shaft itself is just as simple. No o-rings or anything else. It's simply a 1/4" or 5/16" rod that gets covered in grease and slips up into the sleeve. I believe the wiper arm outside the vehicle is what keeps the water from going down the rod and into the vehicle. Take a look at the photos that 3_puppies posted. You can see the sleeve coming up from the vehicle and at the end you have the "adapter" that steps the size of the drive shaft UP to fit in the wiper arm. If you look at the center of the adapter, you can see the drive shaft arm that comes from under the dash. There is a step in the end of the sleeve that the "adapter" fits over to keep water out and then the wiper arm caps the whole mess.

Just a thought but have you taken a good look at the sleeve. Right at the flange area. Mine was not metal. It's some sort of plastic and if it were to crack right where the leg and the flange comes together, it would make it look like the drive shaft was leaking. Just a thought.

Hope this helps a little and if you still need some pics, let me know.

Thanks cracked. I know you sent that awhile ago but it was super helpful. Turns out it was a messed up sleeve. I had an extra assembly from a parts rig that worked great.

Hey Carm. Glad I could help and I'm glad you got the problem solved. It always makes you feel better when you can mark one more thing off the "to do list". I finally got all of mine stuffed back under the dash as well. Still don't have power as of yet so who knows if it's going to work.

crackedup: thanks too for the info. I had seen this thread but never clicked on it, thinking it didn't apply to me. Just goes to show you need to read everything on here - because eventually EVERYTHING applies!!

I'll try to get it all apart without pics but I learn best from illustrations, so they might prove useful if you have them. And just to clarify, if I want to get the wiper arms off the shaft, do they simply pull off with a little muscle or there something more holding them on? I'm going to have to disassemble the whole darn thing but if I can start just by lifting off the wiper arms, that would give me a good head start. Thanks in advance.

The arms should pry/pull straight up and off. I'll try to get a picture of the arm. Got to find one of them first. I put all the linkage back in but haven't gotten to the arms yet.

OK sounds good. I started yanking on mine on Sunday but didn't want to pull too hard in case there was something else holding it all together. With the rarity of some parts on these things, all I need is to permanently bust something that I can't replace. :)

I'll give it another good yank this weekend. No jokes please.

lOOK FRO LEAKS AROUND THE BOLTS THA COME UP TRU THE DASH ONDER THE VENTED CRAWL. THEY HAVE A SEALANT ON THEM FRON THE FACTORY BUT IT TENDS TO CRACK AND LEAK

Old bicycle innertubes work great for this type of thing. May try this approach when the time comes on mine.

Here's a pic of the wiper arm that came off of my 72. Seems to me that a 71 would be pretty close to the same thing.

No pic attached. Try again?

Sorry. There have been a few issues with the server where the pic is uploaded. I think they have everything back to normal now.

Got it! I see the pic now, and have a question. See the "clip" that I highlighted in your image? Is there anything I need to do with this in order to get the wiper arm to pull off, or will the arm simply slide out? It almost looks like it's meant to "lock" the wiper arm onto the post.

Thanks for posting this - very helpful indeed.

I believe you are right about it being a lock of some sort but I don't think it is much of one. I'm sure it would help if you can pull it back a little but I think it will move out of the way on it's own as it seems to be nothing more that a piece of spring steel. It really is a bad design. It's a real weak spot that leaves room for too many problems to come up. Like I had mentioned, yours could be different so take your time and be careful. There aren't a lot of parts available for the wiper mechanism.
