looking for tips or better way to remove lead filler. removing roof on 69 for rust treatment and replacement and couldn't really get the propane torch to soften the lead. finally got out small tip oxy acetylene and though it worked ....surely there's a better way.

If you plan on cleaning it up you can run a little non-flux core wire without welding gas around it, that oughta superheat it. That or a big ass rose bud.

It has been a long time since physical chemistry, but lead will not break down from hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, but does from nitric or acetic acid. Also, when heated with nitrates of alkali metals it forms salts, some of which are water soluble. Use of any of these chemicals, nitric acid, glacial acetic acid, or heated nitrates isn't the safest so your heating method is probably your only method.

Jay, do you have a "new" roof section? I've got one sitting in the yard if you need it.

yes, thanks I've got a 77, I think it will fit.

thanks for asking.

on the lead...used a small tip oxy/acet torch on other side and worked like a dream. instead of using diffuse heat from afar. put the tip directly in the groove and the lead just blew out of there much nicer.

Lead vapor is very bad (worse than dust)...if your using a torch make sure the area is very well ventilated. Although lead dust and lead vapor tend to both end up in the lungs, I think it is easier to protect yourself using an air purifying respirator against the dust versus the vapor. I'd cutoff well and grind.
