Nonetheless, the fact remains, in the developing world, the gold standard for dependable vehicular transport is the Land Cruiser, bar none.

Yes, the Toyota was dependable.

But so was everything else, it seemed everything vehicle was being serviced and checked over by a mechanic all the time. The Land Cruiser 200 as well.

It is not like here where we go for 5000 miles between a service, over there, I remember we went out for two days on the road, once we got back back in the mechanic would check over the vehicle.

Yup. Sounds like my own personal maintenance schedule....

:)

???

Can you explain?

Pretty much after any outing I do (more specifically, a "hardcore outing"-- anything more than 3-4 days on the trail, or events like Rubithon/Death Valley/Southern Utah), I go in an tear everything apart and clean/renew--i.e., bearings/seals/fluids/suspension linkages/anything consumeable gets replaced with OEM new.

Longevity and reliability is a philosophy, not just necessarily inherent in a product like the Land Cruiser where I rely on it to take me places and bring me home.

I think the 3rd world mechanics have this philosophy down good--as well as the NGO's.

I personally have neither the time nor money to do that, but...seriously: bearings after a 4 day trip?

I think you should add the new japanese engine:

V8 4.6L 318HP

This is the 1UR-FE engine that is in the LS460's get as well as you state the LC's for the JDM.

2011 will introduce this engine into the Tundra as an option between the 4.6 or the 5.7.

The 2UZ-FE will be no longer in the NA market. Bummer. Great engine regardless of whether it has a timing belt vs. chain.

The 2UZ is an outstanding engine. Although it didn't make crazy power and was not the most efficient, it was quiet, work hard and never gave me issues.

I have alway hated Toyota's timing chain engines as they make a slight tick when running. The 2Uz was smooth and quiet

The landcruiser V8 4.5 twin turbo has three power ratings
The middle east ,Russia & Africa get 232HP
Autralia gets 262HP
Europe gets 282HP

What makes the difference is it mechanical or is it in the ecu ?

Would A power module chip made for europe car be used in middle east spec ?

dear majelan,
i have found this chip in UK Diesel Tuning with CHIP Express™
they have modified one for middle east spec but it is double the price of Unichip for around 790 Pounds.
am not sure if this is what you are looking for. I am planning to buy one my self sooon

Picture TRD Supercharger Engine installed on a LX 570

Wow! That's the first SC I've seen installed in a 200-series that was able to use the TRD airbox. Everyone else who has managed to do this was required to use the factory airbox from what I understand.

Does anyone know of a way to get Toyota's 4.5L diesel imported to the states? It would be fun to drop one into an FJ40.

Why not just pop a 6bt in it and be done with it?

I would bet that the difference in HP is based on the chip tune, due to assumptions about the quality of the fuel in those localities.

It's not too uncommon to program a diesel's ECU to retard it's max power output to enhance it's longevity. Ie if you have a diesel that is designed to deliver 500HP and you program it to only deliver 350HP you're going to get a motor that will live a very long time as it's never really working that hard. That's one reason why chipping diesels is popular as it often does provide a lot more performance.
