Hi chaps. I recently replaced the rear main seal on '96 80-series 1HZ. Now, currently I have some labyrinth type rear inner axle oil seals. This video shows a Terrain Tamer swivel hub version:

So, for those that aren't overly familiar with these types of seals, their advantage is that the lip on the shaft doesn't actually rotate, thus they don't wear a groove (eventually) into the shaft. Now, has anyone seen a version of one of these for the rear main seal? I daresay it would simply be a matter of getting the exact size of the existing rear main seal and then trying to track down a labyrinth seal equivalent manufactured by one of the many oil seal manufacturers out there. Anyway, just putting it out there in case someone else has already looked into this.

Have you tried posting in the Diesel Forum?

Is your rear crank seal leaking, got a groove on the shaft or ??

AFAIK no one makes a Casssette/Labyrinth type rear crank seal for the 1HZ rear crank seal (90311-95008) which appears to be 95×115×9.5/12Fmm?
Also nothing like that for the FZJ80/1FZFE (90311-99006 superceded to 90311-99009 : ~ 99mm x 119mm x 9.5mm)

You could run it by these guys:

If the link above doesn't have the info maybe try Terrain Tamer, at least they might know what it would entail (prototype, testing, etc).

Or you could start writing some seal manufacturers and ask if they would be interested in making such a seal (SKF, Timken, Parker Hannfiin
Feudenberg, NOK, Trelleborg, etc,). The stock NOK seal (in the FZJ80) lasts hundreds of thousands of miles and if there's a groove some people have adjusted the depth of the new seal slightly or installed a SpeediSleeve.

Last, have you run your question by these guys?

Hi Kernal. Apologies for the late reply. I will throw it onto the diesel forum as you suggest. My particular rear main seal was leaking a little, though the shaft didn't seem to have a visible groove on it, so in my case I just put on a factory, standard seal. The only reason for raising the labyrinth/cassette seal question was merely to see whether in fact others had decided to go down this path.

I will actually post to both Terrain Tamer and Hassard Industries to see what they have to say. If I hear back, I'll post updates here.

Regards,

Stuart

there is a SKF speedi sleeve that fits the crank, handy for a crank with big rust pits on the sealing sleeve.

Yeah, I'm not at the point of needing a speedi sleeve - I'm basically trying to see if I can prevent creating wear marks by utilising a labyrinth/cartridge type oil seal. i.e. prevention is better than cure etc etc...
