Hi all,

I have a 1994 KZN130 SSR-G with 130,000km automatic. I noticed that when starting off from a stop, between coming off the brake and right before I step on the gas pedal I get a little clunk noise under the car, roughly in the middle. This also happens when I've slowed down to <10km/h again between taking my foot off the brake and stepping on the gas. Any ideas of what this could be?

Thanks.

Had to look this one up:

KZN130 = Japanese market Hilux/4Runner, 1KZTE turbo diesel engine

Have you checked your U-joints in the driveshaft?

Agreed it sounds like a joint, and a quick check is to crawl under there and with the truck in park and the E-brake on, give both shafts a good twist. There should be slight play, but very slight. It you feel it turn significantly by hand then it is probably that shaft. You can also look closely at the ends where the joint connects to the case and chunk to see if there is anything unusual like excess grease, etc.

both surfs have done this, my manual way more noticable than my old auto one. what causes it is the front driveshaft play under load and unloading it. due to the ADD setup the front driveshaft and the right hand axel are spining all the time even when 4wd is not engaged. if you are really worried about it you can fit manual hubs and unlock them. this will stop the front diff, axel and thus driveshaft from spinning due to the wheel rotating by disengaging drive to the cvs. hope this helps

My kzn130 only sometimes clunks from going to D quickly from R, but just stopping and going I don't hear any clunks. That said, I grease my truck as often as I change the oil, including the u joints. I also have AISIN manual locking hubs that I keep unlocked on the road.
