KZJ78 - Let the fun begin! Oil leak?

Hi Folks,

Been on this forum for a while, reading endless threads on issues, intro and anything valuable as i waited for my KZJ78 to arrive from Japan to Ireland.

Well, Its finally here! and its beautiful!

I do need some help with a issue I noted, so here I am creating my own thread:

1. I noticed some oil on the cylinder head cover, towards the rear left hand side. I believe its the oil breather pipe. See pictures below. Any idea on how to fix this? seals or gaskets worn? is it a show stopper or can I still drive it to get it registered and tested? Front of the cover seems to be ok.

My KZJ78 has the same oil spot.

My valve cover gasket needs replaced so maybe that could be the issue as well?

Is there any other symptoms showing on your car that makes you think the valve cover gasket needs replacing? I wonder if there is a gasket/seal on the valve cover gasket itself that causes this leak.

I read on some other forums that small seepage is expected from the oil breather pipe but not sure tho.

Oil seepages around where the valve cover gasket sits is the main indicator on mine. Take a look around and see if you can spot similar leaks/marks.

Just judging the pictures you already provided, I’m going to say if you do indeed have a valve cover leak it is much less prevalent than mine is.

Mine also looks similar, I have ‘replace valve cover gasket’ on the to do list but it’s pretty low priority, unless someone suggests otherwise? Nice rig btw

yes I will take a look around to see if there are similar marks. I did notice some oil on the ground after driving it for like 15 mins (first drive since arriving from Japan). Not sure if its from same rear of cover. Will investigate.

Yeah probably worth investigating further if it’s dropping oil, GL!
